In a world where leadership increasingly requires emotional and cultural intelligence skills, this masterpiece couldnt be any timelier. This must-read equips leaders with the ability to first understand themselves, and then use that understanding to lead others intentionally. This is a critical and missing piece in todays leadership spaceyou cannot give what you dont have. My key takeaway from this book is that effective leaders understand themselves, and are empathetic towards others.

Dr. Hilary Aza, Senior Portfolio Manager, Tarrant County

The importance of leadership is now universally accepted as the critical capability for organisation success. Equally important is to understand oneself as an essential first step to be a great leader. This book offers guidance to support both, but most importantly provides a bridge between them in a very relatable and approachable way. This makes it essential for anyone seeking to better understand their personal leadership and to inform further development.

Rob Loader, Executive, Capital Planning & Delivery, Telstra Corporation

A worthwhile read. A solid blend of neuroscience, psychology and business leadership theory, practice and tools. The authors Iain and Madeleine have created a book that is accessible to leaders both highly experienced and those entering leadership and management for the first time. The book to me is written from a position of empowerment, cultural acknowledgment, hopefulness and purpose.

Elissa Farrow, Founder, About Your Transition

A certainty in life is change. To be successful leaders we must be able to change our own leadership style for the different situations we find ourselves in and the varied people we work with. Adaptability is a critical competency for great leaders. This book will challenge your own thinking and behaviour and give you an opportunity to develop your adaptability and leadership style for an evolving future.

Thomas Davis, GM, Corporate Services, Capital & Coast District Health Board

Imagine a playbook that guides you through leadership reflection, opportunity identification, then provides a path forward to an enlightened leadership needed in the VUCA-influenced world of today. Iain and Madeleine are honest and raw about the challenges faced, and the resiliency needed, to lead in business. They outline simple and REAL steps to demystify leadership. This book acts as a guide to prepare you, and your teams, as you face the wicked problems of todayas leaders, as followers, and importantly, as people.

Suzanne M. OGorman, Senior Strategic Business Architect, Innovation, United Healthcare National Accounts

Hutia te rito o te harakeke, kei hea ra te komako eko?
Ki mai ki ahau, he aha te mea nui o te Ao?
Maku e ki atu, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
Maori proverb

If you were to pluck out the center of the flax bush, where would the bell bird sing?

If you were to ask me, What is the most important thing in the world?

I would reply, It is the people, the people, the people.

I recall a conversation early in my career where a senior executive offered the notion that leadership was an elusive ideal. At that time, leadership as a formal competency was in its early stages. It seemed every other month, the covers of leading academic and business publications focused on leadership. Thought leaders such as Peter Drucker and Warren Bennis had already written several books on the topic, and organizations were beginning to use the notion in identification and selection of talent.

In that same period in my own organization, there was not much focus. We were highly successful. Exceptional growth and profitable performance. Shareholders were pleased. Yet the focus on leadership development at the executive level was a low priority, and for the broader management team and staff, a passing thought. I found myself spending personal time reading and immersing myself in the qualities and concepts that were portrayed on those front covers. That marked the beginning of my leadership journey, setting in motion the pursuit of understanding who I was and the leader I wanted to be. But I had to leave that organization to pursue it.

_______________

Fraser, 2017

In Iains book The Business of Portfolio Management, he introduced us to the role of leadership in driving change in an organization. He highlighted that success in organizations depends on effective and relevant leadership. Its that simple. Leadership matters because the future is at greater risk without it. All strategic change happens through projects and programs, and projects and programs are led by people. The ability of an organization to change is therefore dependent on its people. It has been my lifelong assertion that people matter most. The tenants of strategycompetitive advantage, differentiationare created and sustained through people. This demands leadership from not only the top executives but from all levels.
