Julie Jasons weekly columns, over 1000 so far, have provided readers with practical guidance and advice on financial and related matters for almost 20 years. Undoubtedly, Julies toughest task in assembling this book was winnowing her selection of columns into the 92 appearing in this book. She has selected so many that provide practical guidance in useful form for non-professional investors. That is Julies thing, and she does it so well.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU
First and most importantly, you need to know that it is a joy to talk with my readers.
You not only made the column more meaningful to me personally, but also helped earn the column some distinctions and awards. I am grateful to you for your continued engagement and support.
I also recognize that the columns would be limited but for the experts who make their knowledge accessible to my readers. I am indebted to these sources who freely tackle thorny issues raised by my readers and offer insights and resources far beyond one persons knowledge.
Then, there are all the people behind the scenes at Hearst and King Features Syndicate who make the column possible, and last but certainly not least, are my Jackson, Grant Investment Advisers, Inc. colleagues who are always prepared to provide perspectives and insights.
I look forward to continuing our dialoguewrite to me at .
Who Should Read This Book?
This book is about retirement security, a topic that should be meaningful to all, as financial issues from investing to gifting impact so many people, young and not-so-young. If you are looking for context for todays markets, you will enjoy moving through history with me as I advise investors to be patient and occasionally opportunistic in the face of market extremes.
Most adults have an IRA or a 401(k) or both; many of the columns included in this book address investment and technical issues surrounding these tax advantaged savings vehicles, including beneficiary planning and gifting, and even how a child who earns money can set up a Roth IRA, which is the best way to take advantage of time and compounding.
For those seeking advice on their specific financial planning issues, not only do some of the columns speak to common issues, but they also provide advice on how to find good advisers. In this age of identify fraud and other scams, there is a section of columns that will inform readers of a number of practices of which they should be wary. While emails from Nigerian princes may be obvious scams, a phone call from the IRS may seem less questionable.
Improving financial literacy is something that most can work on, and a number of the included columns will be good for parents and their children to review at various stages of their financial planning lifecycles. Estate planning is particularly important for those likely to have to pay estate taxes, so individuals with taxable estates would benefit from both the estate planning and gifting sections of the book.
