This book is dedicated to my husband, my coach, my best friend, my business partner, and my tireless cheerleader, Joe Anderson, without whom I would not be who I am today.

Acknowledgements

I have been writing this book in my head since 2006. I remember sitting in the cafeteria, telling colleagues that I would someday write a book about how silos are destroying corporate America. I was seeing it throughout the organization, but most personally in HR. I wasnt ready to write the book then; I had some additional life experiences to explore. The book evolved as I watched HR teams compete internally with each other, make business decisions that benefited HR but not its customers, and continually act on the defensive by telling their customers how much value they were adding. That just didnt make sense to me. The concept of the different StopOvers evolved as I prepared to guest lecture at a local university; they were a means of working together as a whole HR team. From there, my friend Margaretta Noonan helped me to see the need for Karens story to put the theories into action. My publisher helped me recognize the need to make the model actionable, and here we are. Thanks to both for so much help on getting here. Thanks also to my friend Karen Griffiths who walked the same corporate paths with me through the fun and the difficult times. And, to my 20-year boss and mentor, Ross Dorneman: thank you for giving me wings and trusting in me. Emily Endert helped me to adapt the RoadMap to small HR teams thank you. Lastly and certainly not least, thank you to my husband and son, Joe and Josh Anderson, who are my trusted thinking partners, who tirelessly listen to my ideas and challenge me to innovate.
