From Duncan:
The best gift anyone can offer is the introduction of professional people to one another. We often hear that the reason we need to network with people is to advance our own career. This can be so self-serving. It misses the point and gives networking a bad name. I cringe when I hear, Hey there! How ya doin? Say, I was wondering if you could introduce me to.... The real joy of networking comes when we make a connection between two people we think have similar values, compatible personalities, and synergistic talents. Where the introduction goes from there is up to them. Gift giving is an art. Some gifts end up in a drawer or the yard sale, while others hang on a wall. When lasting friendships and great enterprises are built on such introductions, everyone benefits.
Shari Fryer gave Martha and me just such a gift. As a marketing expert for professional services firms (www.fryerassociates.com), Shari knows more than her fair share of people. She took the time out of her busy schedule to introduce us because she thought we would be good coauthors. Unlock the Hidden Job Market would not have happened without you, Shari. From both of us, thank you.
Of course, a book like this works best when packed with really practical advice. And the best practical advice is gained only through experience of what flies and what flops. For this, I am grateful to the hundreds of jobseekers I worked with during my 18 years in the outplacement industry. Every day, they challenged me to come up with better ideas and taught me more than a few tricks of their own.
From Martha:
My thanks go to C.B.: Without you, this wouldnt have been half the fun or even a smidge as good. You made all the difference.
