Dear Reader,

Good, reliable business partners are a cornerstone of any companysomething that the past two years have really highlighted. For Rheinwerk Publishing, some of our most important business partners are our copyeditors. We continually curate a pool of expert editors and select one for each book project; their role is to read through every line of a manuscript to ensure that every sentence has as clear meaning, that every S/4HANA has an SAP, and that theres not a comma, semicolon, or period out of place. The copyeditor for this book, Julie, has been working with SAP PRESS for longer than I have (more than 10 years to my 6!) and does thoughtful, thorough work.

Back in the SAP ERP days (and shes been with us since then!), Julie would have been categorized as a vendor, even if the product were buying is her knowledge and expertise. Now in the SAP S/4HANA era, she would be considered a business partnerno qualifiers necessary. If you want to learn how to make that switch in your system, read on!

What did you think about Business Partners in SAP S/4HANA ? Your comments and suggestions are the most useful tools to help us make our books the best they can be. Please feel free to contact me and share any praise or criticism you may have.

Thank you for purchasing a book from SAP PRESS!

Acknowledgments

Like all my previous seven books, this book is dedicated to the loving memory of my parents, who have left for their eternal abodes. If you are blessed with one or both living parents, please take great care of them and spend as much time with them as possible, for they are the true source to all our professional and personal successes in life.

I wish to express my enormous admiration for my acquisitions editor at Rheinwerk Publishing, Emily Nicholls. Time and again, Emily has trusted me to bring out and present the very best we possibly could in this E-Bite turned book: Business Partners in SAP S/4HANA: The Comprehensive Guide to Customer-Vendor Integration .

At Rheinwerk Publishing, Ive always been greatly impressed by its managing director, Florian Zimniak, who treats his authors as the greatest asset, which ensures that authors keep coming back to do many more projects. Finally, to my editor, Meagan White: as always, its a just sheer pleasure to collaborate with her on one more book project together! My appreciation also goes out to the unsung and unseen publishing team, such as the copyeditor, the production team, the design team, and so on, who tirelessly work behind the scenes to bring out the very best in each book.

My special appreciation for Bert Oliver Schulze, global lead of SAP S/4HANA Customer Care and Adoption Programs from SAP SE, for agreeing to pen the foreword of this book. His endorsement that a topic as critical as this deserves a much wider and deeper coverage is the reason weve attempted to do justice to this topic.

Last but not the least: To my readersI am truly humbled and honored for all the appreciation Ive received from all of you over the years. I hope that like my previous seven books and several E-Bites, this book also meets your expectations and becomes a stepping-stone in your SAP S/4HANA career.

Foreword

There is no longer any doubt that, with the digitally transformed economy, the way companies make decisions has shifted. The digital age allows hungry entrepreneurs to leapfrog industry boundaries and succeed in different markets, as long as they bring their core competencies to the table.

Fundamentally, this new way of doing things means that a digital business has to deliver on the promise to truly serve the segment of one: the end consumer. The whole value chain has become a highly flexible organism that is run in real timeits now a LIVE business. Even outside extraordinary situations, customer expectations have been raised higher than ever before. Consumers simply expect the ability to select and receive services without friction or delay.

Demand for accurate, real-time information has also changed. In this fully digitized world, information can be measured and made available across the globe instantaneously. This access to information is a key enabler for companies to rethink business processesand the opportunities are massive. Its easy to create a plan for a new, improved service attitude and to praise the customer as king, but keeping that promise is the real challenge. How do you ensure that all your customer touchpoints are great?

To support organizations in their aspirations to leapfrog industry borders and gain significantly higher flexibility, the business partner data model and customer-vendor integration were identified as mandatory transformational cornerstones when SAP decided to build and launch a new generation of ERP with SAP S/4HANA back in 2015. While the business partner data model isnt new, nevertheless, prior to SAP S/4HANA, only a few organizations had it as part of their legacy systems.
