Hi my name is Timothy Morris. I grew up in a small town in New York, where I went to elementary school. When I was in kindergarten, my grandfather put $3,000 in a stock account for me, and thats where my interest in the stock market began.
While Ive of course made my fair share of errors and poor trades in the beginning of my career, Ive always tried to learn from my mistakes and become a better trader. The stock market can be an excellent vehicle to gain wealth and make income when used correctly. When used incorrectly , it can become an excellent place to lose a lot of money! You need an understanding of how the markets operate to be an efficient trader, and thats what I plan to show you in this book.
Ive been trading and studying stocks for many years, and have accumulated extensive knowledge and experience in the process. Like many other investors, I work a full time job and use the stock market to build wealth and beat inflation. For the most part, I am a long term investor, but use a small portion of my funds for speculative type trades.
You can learn more about me, find additional books I have written related to the stock market, as well as informative videos on my website at TradeMoreStocks.com.
Introduction
In this book I will show you not only how to invest in stocks but also a broad - photo 2
In this book I will show you not only how to invest in stocks, but also a broad overview of the stock market and tips that will help you as you start your financial journey. We start with the history of the markets, how they originally formed, and what they have evolved into today. I then explain what exactly a stock is, the way stock prices work, and the major exchanges stocks are traded on. We then go over common terminology you need to know as you begin trading stocks, which will give you a better understanding of the markets.
After that, I show you how to actually start trading stocks. This includes setting up your brokerage account, buying and selling stocks, and different types of stock trading strategies you can partake in. We then go over techniques traders use to beat the market, and hypotheses from economists that purport to show how the stock market operates. And finally, I explain the best way to make money in stocks, even with a small account size and little to your name.
After you are done reading this book, you will have all the knowledge you need to begin trading, as well as the knowledge I have accumulated from my years of experience in the markets. You will know how to open an account, how to buy and sell stocks, and the reason the stock market operates in the way it does. You will become a stock market investor!
While Ill of course do my best to explain everything in laymans terms, if you find you need additional clarification on terms while reading this book, I would suggest using Investopedia.com as a supplemental tool. This website has detailed explanations on everything related to the stock market, and can be a very beneficial website to reference as you begin trading.
You may notice that my book isnt that long (under 100 pages); this is intentional and how I try to keep all my books. Many authors write 300+ page books in an effort to make themselves appear more sophisticated, but they do this with what is known in the publishing world as "fluff." You do not need to know about my prior life as an archeologist or what Warren Buffett eats for breakfast to be a successful investor. I understand people have busy lives and they want investment advice without having drudge through inordinate amounts of filler. I make an effort to include all the important information in my books while leaving out the fluff; hope this is appreciated!
Chapter 1 : History of the Markets
The stock market has a long history dating back hundreds of years The first - photo 3
The stock market has a long history, dating back hundreds of years. The first company to ever go public and issue paper shares of stock to investors was the Dutch East India Company in Europe in 1602. This company also was the first to issue dividends, with yields that went as high as 62% annually (well touch on dividends later).
Traders received paper notes when they purchased stock, which they bought and sold with other traders throughout Europe. Soon the London Stock Exchange (LSE) was born in England, and then the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the United States (both of which are still operating today). Exchanges like the NYSE provided a platform for companies to go public, as well as centralized location for traders to buy and sell shares of stock. Considering many citizens lived miles away from these stock exchanges, and the automobile wasnt invented yet, bucket shops started propping up throughout the United States in the late 1800s.
You could compare a bucket shop to Vegas sports betting, as the shops would allow traders to place wagers on the direction of stocks, without actually owning any shares. These bucket shops were quite speculative and risky, in that traders could get up to $100 worth of stock buying power with a deposit of just $1. This ultimately meant traders could lose a lot of money betting on stocks. Soon bucket shops were made illegal, as they were thought to be the cause of two market crashes in the early 1900s.
But even in the era of bucket shops, exchanges have always needed to keep a constant record of the price of public companies. Instead of computers, stock prices were listed on ticker tape at these early exchanges, which was essentially stock symbols and prices being communicated via telegraph lines, and printed out on long strips of paper via an automated typewriter. You may hear traders say phrases like read the tape, which is a reference to the ticker tapes used many years ago.
