PREFACE
Over the past decade a number of extremely valuable textbooks on pulmonary medicine have been published. These prove especially useful when one encounters a patient with a particular respiratory condition, or when preparing for examinations, such as the pulmonary boards. However, the ability to evaluate the extent of knowledge gained from such textbooks and to assess areas of weakness is only truly fulfilled when another such case is encountered or when tested by examination. The goal of the present book is to assist the "student" of pulmonary medicine in gaining an understanding of many aspects of pulmonary medicine through an interactive process. It is hoped that this will prove a valuable aid for those preparing for an examination and for those who wish to update their knowledge.
The book is organized into two main parts, namely multiple-choice questions and answers.

Each part begins with basic principles and covers the gamut of pulmonary disorders and ends with critical care. For every answer I have provided a reasonably detailed rationale so that the reader will understand the underlying rationale, at least as I see it. Case problems are included in order to give the reader a feel for the clinical setting. More than 650 references are provided in an organized manner, from adenocarcinoma to yellow nail syndrome. The resulting book intends to serve as an inclusive review of the discipline so that the diligent reader will fare better in the board examination.

I am grateful to the many fellows in training in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care at the University of Colorado, who over the years have presented their interesting cases at the weekly Pulmonary Grand Rounds, and whose reviews of the literature have unwittingly formed the basis for many of the questions and answers in this book. I am also grateful to Dr.

Marvin Schwarz, Head of the Division, for providing some of the radiographs.
