In the world as it is today, with our hectic lifestyles and the many challenges we face on a daily basis, a consistent and nutritious diet is not easy to maintain, especially in the longer-term.

There are so many diets and so much health advice out there that you may well be a bit overwhelmed by what advice to put into practice. Will it improve my health? Will it solve my health problems? Will I be able to maintain the advice for some weeks, let alone months and even years? Health and weight loss advice can certainly be like an overwhelming maze that leads you from one path to another without getting anywhere fast.

Ok, so with dietary-information overwhelm, why look at how an alkaline diet can help you, whether for weight loss or simply for improving health?

Proponents of the alkaline diet say that a diet high in acid-producing foods disrupts the natural pH balance of our bodies and creates the loss of essential minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and sodium as the body tries to restore equilibrium. This imbalance is what is said to make the body prone to illness and gaining weight.

The pH level of your body is directly linked to the health of your body. All foods are either acid-forming or alkaline-forming and the bodys health and wellbeing are affected by the proportion of each we ingest.

A diet too high in acid-forming foods such as cheese, wheat, sugar, processed foods and meat, can result in an overly acidic body (acidosis) and can lead to a wide range of health problems. Generally it wont come as too much of a surprise - in the west especially, the diet is too acidic.

We are aiming for a diet of 70% alkaline foods and 30% acid-forming foods

On a positive note, the alkaline diet can be followed fairly easily and within a relatively short amount of time you can begin to get your acidic level down, if needed. If you already have quite a good diet, you will learn why you should continue to eat alkaline foods, and what these are.

Background to the Alkaline Diet

In the 19th century, the French biologist Claude Bernard discovered that changing the diet of rabbits from mainly plant (herbivore) to mainly meat (carnivore) changed the rabbits urine to being more acidic. Subsequently scientists built on his findings.

In 1933, the concept of pH imbalance was published by a New York doctor called William Howard Hay in his ground-breaking book, A New Health Era. This New York doctor said that all disease is caused by autotoxication, or self-poisoning, due to acid accumulating in the body. In his words:

Now we depart from health in just the proportion to which we have allowed our alkalies to be dissipated by introduction of acid-forming food in too great amount... It may seem strange to say that all disease is the same thing, no matter what its myriad modes of expression, but it is verily so. - William Howard Hay, M.D.

More recently, in his remarkable book Alkalize or Die , Dr. Theodore A. Baroody basically says the same thing:

The countless names of illnesses do not really matter. What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause...too much tissue acid waste in the body! - Theodore A. Baroody, N.D., D.C., Ph.D.

More recently a host of alkaline-related diets emerged (eg the alkaline ash diet and the acid alkaline diet), whose popularity has recently taken off after many celebrities took it up. Many nutritionists are now stating the benefits of this diet for weight loss, and for helping health issues and diseases such as improving energy levels and memory, preventing headaches, bloating, heart disease, arthritis, muscle pain and insomnia.

Despite the growing interest in balancing the bodys pH for good health and disease prevention, the medical profession remains divided about the alkaline diet. Needless to say, you wont do any harm if you are sensible as the alkaline diet is in line with general healthy guidelines eating more green vegetables and less meat and processed food for example. But in order to undertake it properly an understanding is needed of which foods are alkaline and which acidic, as it is not always obvious. For eg, lemons are acidic outside the body but once ingested they become alkaline.

At the same time, some alkaline diet advocates would even go so far as to say that the single most important measurement for your health is the pH more vital even than blood pressure, cholesterol count, blood sugar, hormones and calorie count. Whether this statement is true or not, the fact remains that eating alkalising foods is a key factor in balancing our health. For the alkaline diet is really a common sense diet.

Chapter 1: The Alkaline Diet and pH explained

The most important of all is your blood pH level. Human blood pH should be slightly alkaline at an ideal level of 7.35 - 7.45. Below or above this range can lead to health issues, symptoms and disease. If the pH level drops even by a small amount the body gets to work to try to neutralize the extra acid. To do this, the body needs alkaline minerals, like calcium, manganese, magnesium, iron, and potassium.

In an effort to neutralize extra acid, our bodies go to great lengths and can wreak havoc on other tissues and systems.
