Introduction
Being very interested in alternative medicineforms like Ayurveda and being taught yoga as a part of our Academiccurriculum, in our student days, I soon began to understand why theancients in the East considered yoga to be an integral part oftheir lives. This book is going to introduce you to some of themore common ancient natural healing traditions practiced in theIndian subcontinent since ancient times.
I was talking to an American audience aboutalternative Indian medicine, when I spoke about Ayurveda and yoga.A friend immediately said, But that is religious, and is based onHindu practices.
I would like to clear up this point once andfor all. These practices are definitely not based to peoplebelonging to one religion. Besides, the people who wrote theseexercises and rules for right and proper living, and practiced themmillenniums ago were Aryans and they gave this knowledge in theirreligious and spiritual books to the people of India who werepracticing Hinduism.
Practicing Hinduism? What do I mean bythat?
Consider Hinduism at that time to be a way oflife, practicing nonviolence and following the wise teachings ofthe ancient ones. It is now a full-fledged religion, incorporatingthose same beliefs, traditions, and way of life in their manner ofliving and being. The ancient knowledge of those wise ones are nowbeing practiced, as set down in the Vedas and the Puranas.
I am definitely not a Hindu, but sincechildhood, I and my Hindu, Christian, Mussalman, Buddhist, Sikh andJain Friends did all these yogic exercises every morning, duringschool assembly, and we never believed them to be part of areligious tradition belonging exclusively to the Hindus.
Our teachers were sensible enough not to leteven an inkling of this controversial idea blossom in ourinfantile, suspicious and susceptible minds, because that wouldmean that 17% of the students would immediately have their parentsyelling keep religion out of academics. This is unacceptable.
This is an extremely touchy subject in theEast.
And because we considered these exercises tobe part of PT, 15 minutes of this healthy workout kept us healthyand happy throughout our childhoods and youth. We never knew thatthey were yogic exercises!
According to us, we were keeping healthy, ina natural manner. We definitely did not chant Hindu hymns whiledoing these exercises.
That in itself would be anathema Maranatha toanybody not a Hindu, including I.
So the idea that this universal healingtradition is limited to just one peoples, is definitely wrong, andit has been started by some lazy minded people, who would ratherfind excuses not to do a thing rather than work out.
So here am I not a Hindu!- telling all myfriends all over the globe how they can keep healthy, throughdifferent natural remedy practices, which have been in vogue forcenturies in the Indian subcontinent.
These practices are going to include oilpulling, which is getting to be extremely popular in the Westtoday, and also water therapy.
All this information was taken by me from anexperienced Ayurvedic doctor, so that all the information that isbeing given to you has been time tested and has been recommended byhim. But before that, you would want to know a little bit moreabout the terms, which I am going to be using in this book.
Whatis Ayurveda
Natural products including the use of herbsand spices are a part of Ayurvedic treatments.
Ayurveda is a traditional system ofalternative medicine, practiced by the ancient Hindus millenniumsago. This is based on spiritual, emotional, physical and mentalharmony through meditation, natural medicine, herbal remedies, change in diet and lifestyle and yogic poses and breathing.
WhatIs Yoga?
Yoga is an ascetic ancient Hindu discipline, which is spiritual, and includes meditation and breathing indifferent postures of the body and which is now being practiced torelax your heart, body and spirit.
Many people in the West have now discoveredyoga, to be an astonishingly effective manner in which they canmeditate, and de-stress themselves. This is also a natural waywhich you can keep healthy and tension free. More and moreresearchers in the West are also looking at the efficacy ofAyurveda as a form of alternative medicine, because it relies onnatural remedies instead of chemicals, artificial-based drugs. Also, this medical practice takes care of your problem, throughnatural remedies which go to the root of the matter and help cureyou.
OilPulling
I knew all about water therapy, but whensomebody suggested oil pulling to me as an effective ancienthealing process, I immediately went to my Ayurvedic friend, philosopher and guide.
He then told me that yes, this process hasbeen in vogue for millenniums, and many people do not know aboutit. Consider that to be Oil Sucking, because the term oil pullingcan also bring up a vision of the extraction of oil from seeds orfrom the seabed! Semantics.
So now I am going to tell you all about OilSucking. You are going to put some oil in your mouth, and suck itfor a while. This is considered to be an effective way of which youcan get rid of a number of ailments, and this is known as the OilSucking Remedy Procedure.
