Guide
Letter to the Reader
Dear Reader,
Im glad youve decided to read The Everything Guide to the Acid Reflux Diet. As with anything I write, Ive put forth my best effort in giving you a book that is easy to read, chock-full of useful nuggets of knowledge, and most importantly, contains information that can help you not only treat your acid reflux, but prevent it. Thats because Im not like your regular run-of-the-mill family doc, even though Im currently the Chairman and Medical Director of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine Family & Community Medicine Department. Im residency trained and board certified in preventive medicine, public health, and integrative medicine, so to me, helping my patientsand you, my readersprevent an illness or disease is just as important to meif not more sothan treating the disease itself. Yes, I know thats pretty radical thinking in this day and age of insurance-driven healthcare that is government mandated and regulated, but thats okay; Im very comfortable working outside the mainstream if thats what it takes to give the best care and information to both my patients and you!

Introduction
Acid reflux. Gastroesophageal reflux disease. These and other terms describe a condition in which acid from the stomachwhere its supposed to begoes into the esophaguswhere its not supposed to beand from there the story goes rapidly downhill. Because of that acid in the esophagus, people who suffer from acid reflux can have a number of symptoms including heartburn, nausea, coughing, and chest pain. And while those symptoms can range from being an occasional annoyance to a debilitating chronic condition, there are more deadly consequences of untreated acid reflux, such as esophageal cancer. That last fact alone makes a book on acid reflux well worth writing and reading.
Acid reflux isnt just something that strikes a person here or there; the fact of the matter is that 60 percent of the U.S. adult population will suffer from acid reflux within a yearly timeframe, while 2030 percent of the adult population will suffer weekly. In a population of over 300 million people, those facts make acid reflux one of the most common diagnoses seen in doctors offices every day. But acid reflux is not just seen and treated in physicians offices; studies have shown that hospitalizations due to acid reflux rose over 100 percent in just an 8-year period between 1996 and 2004. Some of those hospitalizations were due to esophageal cancera cancer linked to untreated or undertreated acid refluxwhich has been increasing in incidence in the United States despite the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the war on cancer.
