Introduction

Why I Wrote This Book

I want to start off by telling you a story of a childhood friend of mine. Lets call her Britch Smith. Britch and I have known each other since seventh grade. Britch was beautiful, thin, and smart. We were and are still great friends. Now, I will admit, growing up, I was envious of Britch. Why? Britch was my friend who stayed slender and thin, did little to no activity, and ate whatever she wanted. I, on the other hand, was an athlete. I ran, lifted weights, played tennis, cycled, and played soccer. Yet, past the age of 13, I could never eat anything I wanted and stay thin. Ill admit, I was never overweight and I was pretty fit, but it never came easy. I had to work hard at it each and every day.

I always assumed Britch was one of the lucky ones. I attributed her thin and slender body to good genes. She certainly didnt work out to stay thin, and eating cereal and grilled cheese sandwiches daily didnt really support a thin body (at least that is what I thought). Yet, she was thin, really thin.

Do you have a Britch in your life?

And are you wondering: How did Britch stay so thin and not work out? Well, what I now know and understand is that Britch had great cellular respiration. Huh? Cellular respiration? Yes, cellular respirationor, as most of us know it, metabolism. Now some would say, Well, of course she had a great metabolism. She was 13 years old. All 13 years old have a great metabolism. And I would say, Look around you. How many 13-year-olds are overweight and obese today? Fifty years ago, youth was synonymous with being thin. However, in todays world this is no longer true. In todays world the youth are the fastest-growing overweight population around.

So what has happened? Are we just eating more? Are we moving less? Based on the activity level and the diet of my friend Britch, I would say eating more and moving less may play a partial role, but to be honest, she barely moved and ate a ton. And Britch was not obese; she was thin. So what else may be going on here?
