Introduction
If youre interested in losing weight and improving your health, youre probably familiar with the idea that a sluggish metabolism can prevent your diet or exercise plan from succeeding. While its true that one persons metabolic rate is often very different from the expected average, a slower rate doesnt doom you to failure. By taking some steps to determine how your individual metabolism works, you can tailor your diet and exercise plan to be effective even if your personal rate is a little too efficient.
Thats not the only power you have, however. If your current metabolic rate is slower than ideal, you have the ability to speed it up, making your efforts to improve your health that much more effective. This book will help you understand how human energy metabolism works. Itll also give you the keys to help control your own metabolic rate through goal setting, carefully controlled eating, and the right kinds of exercise. Youll learn how to keep track of your progress and deal with potential pitfalls, and youll get some examples of how to take control of your metabolic rate on a day to day basis.
Once you have the right tools, you wont have to feel like a slave to your natural metabolism anymore. By simply taking the time to learn about and understand your own body, you can be slimmer, more fit and much healthier. It takes a little time and it isnt easy, but the results are definitely worthwhile. If you feel like diets and exercise never work for you, the answer might be getting in control of your metabolism.
Chapter 1- Understanding the Metabolic Rate
What Is Your Metabolism?
A surprising percentage of people talk about metabolism without really understanding what it is or how it affects your food intake. Simply put, metabolism is the process by which your body converts the energy in food into fuel, then burns that fuel to function. The actual process relies on a huge number of organs and occurs in every tissue in your body. It is regulated by enzymes and hormones, which can be influenced by many other factors.
While many people like to simply think of their bodies as engines that burn food instead of gasoline, the reality is a lot more complicated. Thats why its so important to learn everything you can about your metabolism before you attempt to influence it.
How Does Metabolism Work?
Your metabolism is responsible for establishing the rate at which you burn calories. In turn, that influences your natural energy and activity level, as well as how easily you lose or gain weight. There are many factors that can influence your basic metabolic rate. For instance, younger people tend to have higher metabolisms. After about age 40, you can expect your metabolic rate to slow by about 5 percent every 10 years. Men also tend to have higher metabolisms than women, and people who have more lean muscle burn calories faster than people who carry mostly fat.
Your genetics also affect your metabolism. If your parents or other close relatives tend to be naturally active and lose weight easily, theres a good chance that you will also. If your biological family members are prone to slow metabolisms, you may also have trouble with excess body fat and low activity levels. This can be made worse by some diseases and hormonal problems; for instance, people with thyroid problems often have trouble producing the hormones that are responsible for burning calories properly. This results in low energy levels and a tendency to gain weight, even if you are eating very little.
Metabolism Control and Health
The enormous amount of individual variation in metabolism makes it very important to determine your own specific rate if you want to lose or gain weight successfully. Unfortunately, most people exercise little to no control over their metabolisms, making it difficult or impossible to alter their bodies. This can be frustrating, but it also leaves you open to a number of potentially dangerous health conditions.
While increased body fat isnt considered a significant health issue by itself, it has been linked to a number of diseases and other conditions that can significantly decrease your quality of life or even prove fatal. This is especially true when you combine the weight gain caused by a very low metabolism with the low energy and activity level that often accompanies it. Inactive people have a lower average lifespan than even the moderately active, regardless of their body weight. Adding just 75 minutes of light exercise per week could add almost 2 years to your life, according to Harvard University, while giving in to a slow metabolisms and the lure of inactivity could shave time off.
Measuring Your Metabolic Rate
How do you know if your metabolism is fast, slow, or close to human average? Unfortunately, measuring the rate at which your body processes and uses energy from food can be fairly difficult. We dont have a simple medical test to tell you exactly how many calories to consume. Instead, most people need to use a trial and error approach to determine whether or not theyre eating or exercising enough. There are a few other ways to get a ballpark estimate for your daily calorie requirements, too. Heres a look at some of the options.
