TO ALL THE WOMEN STUCK FINDING A SOLUTION TO HEALING THEIR BODY.
MAY THIS BE A GUIDE TO TRUSTING YOUR INTUITION, LOVING YOUR BODY AND TAKING IMPERFECT DAILY ACTION TO ACHIEVING A VIBRANT AND HEALTHY LIFE.
Welcome! I bet that youre here because youre looking for answers to heal your thyroid, support your menstrual cycle, lose weight and just feel better. When it comes to our health, we all want something different. But universally, its safe to say that we all want to feel and look good.
As with many health practitioners, I started in this industry because of my own health crisis, looking for answers and help. I want to share my own personal story with you, because Ive been in the trenches, just as you are. I want you to know that there is a better way and there is a solution.
My journey started when I was a little girl. I was always innately interested in food and nutrition, and I spent so much time outdoors and in the garden. In fact, I remember my parents taking me to McDonalds and I would order salad. Yestrue story! Thats not to say I never had any Big Macs, because Ive had plenty of those. But I was always connected in some way to healthy food.
I was also lucky enough to grow up in a household where my mother made everything from scratch and would literally cringe at packaged foods. Butas most teenagers tend to doI ate lots of carbs and sugary foods. My idea of healthy food back in the day was margarine, low-fat foods, whole-wheat anything and artificial low-calorie sweeteners.
I struggled with terrible PMS as a teenager that left me in bed curled up for days. Because of this, I went on the birth control pill, not truly understanding the effects it was having on my ovulation and hormones. I remember being in my doctors office telling him how bad my period pain was. I also thought to myself, Well, if all my friends are on the pill, then I should be too! Without any hesitation, my doctor handed me a pack of pills and I started on them that very day. In fact, I continued taking them for seven years.
I also struggled with migraines, headaches and terrible digestion. My gut health took quite the hit over the yearsfrom over-the-counter meds, antibiotics if I got sick, the birth control pill . Oh, and I cant forget the parasite I caught on vacation in my mid-twenties, which led to antiparasitics, antifungals and more gut damage.
Fast-forward to my university years: I was working out regularly, in great shape, lean, energetic and eating really well. But all of this was coupled with some very late nights of studying and partying, along with drinking and late-night fast food. I remember how bloated I would get after eating and how bad my migraines would get at timesleaving me to go to bed, turn off all the lights, drown out all sound and just lie there until it all went away.
During my university years, I dated a guy whose family was into organic food, homeopathics and nutrition. It sparked a huge interest for me! I loved learning about food and how it affected our bodies and how you could use all-natural remedies to heal and support your health. This led me to enroll in the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition, where I studied to become a holistic nutritionist. From there I went on to take courses in immunology, cancer care, homeopathics, hormones and functional nutrition.
Fitness was also a huge part of my life. As a kid, I spent a lot of time outdoors and playing sports. From soccer to basketball to gymnastics, I was a very active young girl. As I got older, I found a love for weight lifting, which led me to become a certified personal trainer. I also taught kickboxing and Pilates classes, and I even received my 200-hour yoga teacher training certificate.
I remember my first week at nutrition school. I sat at the front of the class, and it was as though a light bulb had gone off. In that very first week I learned how detrimental the birth control pill was, how it was robbing my body of essential nutrients and impairing my gut health. In that moment, I stopped taking it, started to ditch the fake diet foods (aka margarine, artificial sweeteners and low-fat foods) and got on a hormone-balancing post-pill supplement protocol. I cared for my body and health like never before.
This passion led me to want to help other women to support their hormones and bodies with whole food nutrition, strategic supplementation and lifestyle interventions. But it didnt end there.
Fast-forward to early 2017: I was a busy entrepreneur working hard on growing and building my online nutrition business when I started to feel off. I was extremely tired, and I felt puffy and achy. I had gained a couple of extra pounds. I couldnt sleep, and I started experiencing painful aches and pains in my hands, fingers and wrists. At this point, I had coached hundreds of women in my practice and these symptoms, although new to me, were something I was quite familiar with from working with my clients.
One day while working out, I had a hard time gripping and holding my weights. The pain in my hands was unbearable. In that instant I said to myself, This is Hashimotos thyroiditis.
A few weeks later I went to my naturopath and got a requisition for a full thyroid panel. Conventional medicine only tests for thyroid stimulating hormone or TSHsomething well dive into in Chapter 3 (). I knew I needed a full panel to truly get a clear picture of what was going on with my thyroid and test for autoimmune antibodies.
Sure enough, my labs confirmed I had Hashimotos and my antibodies were quite high. This confirmation led me down the path of deeper healing. I started on the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol (AIP) diet, revamped my supplement regime and made sleep my top priority. Within weeks I had already started to feel a difference, and within six months my antibodies had dropped by half.
Autoimmunity runs in my family. There is often a genetic disposition, along with gut dysbiosis and environmental triggers that can affect autoimmune function. Its safe to say that all those years of antibiotics, over-the-counter meds and the pill definitely played a role in my autoimmune diagnosis.
My diet has drastically changed over the years, and where I am today with my health has been a twenty-plus-year journey of experimenting, learning and testing. Wherever you are with your journey, this is the perfect starting point to dive in, be open, experiment, learn and test for yourself.
If theres one thing I know for sure, its that when women start to take care of themselves and fuel their bodies with nutrition, movement and a whole lot of self-love and kindness, they start to stand more powerfully, make better choices and create more possibilities for their lives. And I know this to be true from my own personal experience with health and hormones, as well as the experiences of thousands of women Ive coached over the years.
