Foreword

I first met Ryan during a U.S. national team camp as we were starting our preparations for qualifying for the World Cup. At the time, I figured he was the new data analyst guy and didnt think too much about how he would help our team. I quickly realized that what happened at practiceand for how longwas dictated by him. His knowledge about the game was evident when he spoke, but his ability to integrate the science and numbers into the training and gym sessions was quite remarkable.

Bringing on a sports scientist was not very common at the time. But Ryan proved to the team why the soccer federation held him in high regard. He quickly earned the respect of not only the coaching staff, but also the entire team, including myself. Players immediately started to put their full trust in Ryan as far as how they went about their training regimen. Being able to work with Ryan allowed me to see where I was cutting corners and how to maximize my potential to perform at an elite level for longer periods.

After a few years passed, our paths crossed again, but on a more permanent basis with Atlanta United of Major League Soccer. I knew that by hiring Ryan, the club was going to be doing things in a professional manner and wanted to achieve great success, and that my move there would be a successful one. Of course, as a player you never know if certain moves will work out or not, as there are various factors and a sports scientist is only a part of the equation. But that was a strong signal to me that the club was very ambitious.

Ryans professionalism, work ethic, dedication to his craft, and knowledge are only some of the characteristics that make him one of the best in this global game. For the past four years, I have put total trust and faith in Ryan regarding my workload, gym sessions, and recovery days, and he has never let me down. I continue to get stronger, remain healthy, and perform at the highest level, helping our club win domestic trophies while still competing on the international level.

Preface

Writing a book about conditioning for soccer has been a career goal of mine since I started in the physical preparation field. Working with athletes of different calibers and competition levels has offered a number of insights that I feel are valuable to the fitness community. By no means do I feel the perspective I can offer is going to satisfy all facets of the competitive soccer spectrum. However, my main objective is to offer the perspective of someone who has worked at the youth/amateur, collegiate, professional, and international levels. I present the most consistent aspects of programming, what I deem the foundation of physical preparation, that are the most applicable to all environments.

Through the insights provided in this book, I hope to empower coaches and players to explore their own training and competition cultures and be mindful of the positives and negatives. Look within the process; do not simply wish to duplicate positive outcomes. Instead, establish a foundation of insightfulness and self-exploration by analyzing the processes that lead to positive outcomes. Find the weaknesses or inconsistencies within the processes and improve them through small modifications.

It isnt my intention to tell others they are wrong, but instead to provide my perspective to help you create a solid foundation for various competitive levels. This book presents ideas for coaches and athletes to implement at appropriate times of the year to build a foundation of knowledge that is conceptually consistent with established practices based on scientific literature and a sound understanding of the physiology of the body.
