Foreword
IT IS a great pleasure to write the Foreword to a book whose unofficial subtitle is Phonology is fun! In the past fifteen years there has been an enormous expansion of our knowledge about children's speech development and children's speech disorders. This has largely come about through the application of linguistic, specifically phonological, techniques of analysis in the study of children's speech. These research activities in time led to the identification of a new branch of applied linguistics: clinical phonology. They also produced a proliferation of assessment tools designed to provide a phonological evaluation of children's speech. Allied to these assessment tools and derived from the concepts of clinical phonology are ideas about approaches to therapy. But actual materials for use in putting these ideas into practice when carrying out treatment are lacking.
Gwen Lancaster and Lesley Pope have responded to the evident gap between theory and practice by producing a book which is for cliniciansby clinicians. In fact this publication is more than a book; it is an essential clinical resource. The authors skilfully combine theory and practice across the whole field of clinical phonology. They first set the scene with a broad examination of the area, demonstrating its impact on clinical assessment and diagnosis.
Their consideration of the theoretical concepts applied in clinical phonology provides the framework within which they present their therapeutic techniques and materials. These will be very welcome to the large number of clinicians who on a daily basis are faced with having to invent minimal pair games or word lists for children requiring treatment for speech problems.
