Introduction

Thank you and congratulations for downloading this dog training handbook.

Owning a dog is a lot of fun; however, it comes with great responsibilities. One of these is disciplining it.

Would it not be great to own a pet that is well-trained and loved by everybody? Just imagine the convenience it would bring if your dog is responsive to your commands, well-behaved, and potty trained. You can go to work every day without the worries of leaving a pet that would mess up your place or disturb your neighbors with excessive barking.

This book will give you proven effective step-by-step ways on training your dog for obedience, crate training, braking and more! The steps are simple, easy to understand and doable.

Read through and start your dog's transformation!

Chapter 1: Be The Top Guy (or Girl)

Before you begin with dog training, you have to familiarize yourself with the so-called "pecking order". This is a term used to describe their natural hierarchy. Without human intervention, canines usually pick which one among them will be the alpha the leader of the pack. This is either the strongest, biggest or the eldest.

Domesticated dogs still have the natural ability to know that there are dominant and submissive ones in their new pack: your family. You can figure out whether your dog considers himself dominant or not by taking note of some of his gestures.

Alpha dogs show their authority by standing on high places while looking down on everything. Your dog may display this sign of dominance by climbing stairs, tables, chairs and even your lap.

Another sign is being demanding. This includes nudging to be pet, pawing you to play with him even after you refuse, begging, and barking interminably to get what he wants.

More dominant behavior of dogs are staring directly on someone's eyes, uncontrollable barking, pulling the leash when walking, jumping at you, refusal to obey commands, obsessive licking, and aggressiveness.

You can also tell your dog's dominance by his stance. Alpha dogs hold their head high with a forward stance. Their eyes are usually half moon shaped, they show their teeth and hold their tails upright.

Now that you know how to determine this behavior, your goal should be to put yourself on top of the hierarchy. Be the alpha leader. This will prevent difficulties in the training sessions. How do you establish dominance over your pet?

First, take your pet for a walk. This is not the usual one wherein the dog leads the way. You should do the "pack walk". The dog should be beside or behind you. In a canine pack, the leader always walks in front while the others stay back.

Never allow your dog to sleep on your bed or lie down on your lap. Being on these

Get the door. Do not let your dog be the first one to welcome your guests and get attention. Keep in mind that you should be the first one getting all the attention because you are the alpha.

Try the eye contact game. In a pack, other dogs are not allowed to look at the alpha in the eye unless he begins a challenge your authority. Look at your dog straight in the eyes and wait for him to blink or look away first. Do this exercise a couple of times until the dog cannot look at you in the eyes anymore.

Chapter 2: One-word Commands

It is important to learn the basic commands to start your training exercises. Associating certain words with actions will speed up and simplify your dog's training. Learn basic commands that are effective and easy to teach.

Learn to say "no". As you have learned in the lesson about pecking order, your dog should know that you are the boss. This means that he should stop whenever you say so. To make your dog associate this word with his wrong actions, say "no" whenever you witness him biting, chewing, digging or eliminating in the wrong place. Be convincing by saying it in a firm voice. Once he stops the wrong act, lavish him with prai ses.

Teach your dog to sit. This is a canine's way of being submissive and polite. Once your dog learns how to do this, he will become less aggressive. Pick the right time to reinforce this command. Train your dog to sit when you are busy doing something or when you are talking with somebody. Get a treat and hold it above your dog's nose then state the dog's name affixing it with the word "sit". Once he tilts his head up, his bum will go down. If he does not sit, assist the action and once he does, praise him. Do this for several times each day. When he becomes familiar with the verbal command, stop assisting him and start accompanying the command with a hand signal.

Next one is "come". You need a command to release him from "stay". Make the dog sit and then stay. After this, call his name and make a signal such as a clap or a hand gesture to make him come closer. If he does not, you may use a treat during the first few attempts. You need to establish a great deal of trust to make a dog come to you. Do not associate calling his name with negative things such as punishment or nagging.
