Dogs dont really know about cause and effect in the long term. They dont really think in the future, but instead within the first couple of seconds. They dont have strong attention spans either, which is why you got to jump right on this when it comes to training your dog. You have to do it within two seconds of the desired behavior for the best results, and if you wait too long, you might end up rewarding bad actions.

Dogs also respond very well to praise. Just like how a human responds to rewards well, a dog does too. You feel great when youre rewarded for something good, and a kid definitely feels great if they are rewarded for good behavior too. A dog is similar in that, because a good behavior will encourage them to continue to do it, and bad behavior when not rewarded wont be continued over time. Its conditioning, and that is how you train a pet, so rewards are some of the best and most essential ways to help a dog really get the results that it wants, and to help improve your training as well.

You should make sure that you praise the dog fast though. You dont want to reward behavior that isnt good, such as maybe you tell it to sit, wait five seconds and its back up, and then you reward. You should do it almost immediately so that the dog knows, and you should see that the dog does it and you immediately reward the guy. You want to reward the good actions, and you want to do it immediately, so make sure that you do it almost on instinct when it happens. This is a fast way to really get a dog to understand, and to get him to do the commands and actions that you want.

To do this, you should first invest in a clicker. These can be bought at your local pet store for cheap, and theyre great for a dog who has a very short attention span. To use this, give your pet the command, and the second they do it, click it. This clicker is faster than you giving them a treat or a pet, and it is great for dogs who dont really have the wherewithal to learn fast. It is also a way to help stay with a dogs learning speed. The dog will be able to use this, and over time, the dog will start to associate the clicking sound with good behavior. It wont do it right away, and sometimes it will look at you as if youre completely mad, but after a while, it will start to associate it. The dog will then assume the sound is instant reward instead of anything else, and it can be better than a treat.
