Preface
Relevant Science Explained in Everyday Terms
Almost every day, new information is released or published regarding COVID-19. Much of it is written by scientists for scientists. As the authors of this book, we personally find it interesting and read nearly all of it.
But for people without scientific backgrounds, it can be hard to keep up with all the news and daily changes. Plus, the key findings are explained in scientific jargon and torrents of numbers. Accordingly, much of the science is largely unread and often ignored by most people.
In this book, we strive to explain the science in everyday terms. That has been a huge challenge, but we thought it was critical that this information be accessible to everyone. We hope to publish a future edition in more languages beyond English.
To keep the book readable, we had to be very selective on what science we chose to explain. All sections of the book were reviewed in detail by four non-scientists. We repeatedly revised the content until they said: I got that straight, very interesting.
We have done the leg work of distilling and compiling key information you need to best prepare for, manage, and recover from COVID-19.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Matt Croughan
A First-hand Perspective
Before COVID-19 reached the western mountains of the USA in early 2020, I enjoyed several days of skiing. I also enjoyed a glass of fine beer, wine, or whisky at the end of each day.
About March 15, the local ski resorts around Lake Tahoe closed and, as it turns out, I was infected with the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. While the virus incubated in me, before any symptoms, I strapped my skis into a backpack and snowshoed up the mountains with my son James. Even when the lifts are not running, skiers like me will not let fresh powder go to waste. Skiing fresh powder is worth a hike up a mountain.
Little did I know that my world would soon change quite dramatically. I would eventually be unable to walk even 1 mph (mile per hour) on flat ground without going strongly hypoxic (not having enough oxygen). Walking up even a small hill, much less a mountain, was out of the question. Any drink with alcohol tasted harsh.
I had a severe case of COVID-19, I would soon need full time oxygen therapy, wherein pure oxygen flows through tubing into my nostrils. Otherwise, I would go hypoxic even just sitting on a chair or laying down in bed.
When I first wrote this introduction in June 2020 I had two liters per minute - photo 11
