Math and Art: An Introduction to Visual Mathematics: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Math and Art: An Introduction to Visual Mathematics" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Math and Art: An Introduction to Visual Mathematics explores the potential of mathematics to generate visually appealing objects and reveals some of the beauty of mathematics. It includes numerous illustrations, computer-generated graphics, photographs, and art reproductions to demonstrate how mathematics can inspire or generate art.

Focusing on accessible, visually interesting, and mathematically relevant topics, the text unifies mathematics subjects through their visual and conceptual beauty. Sequentially organized according to mathematical maturity level, each chapter covers a cross section of mathematics, from fundamental Euclidean geometry, tilings, and fractals to hyperbolic geometry, platonic solids, and topology. For art students, the book stresses an understanding of the mathematical background of relatively complicated yet intriguing visual objects. For science students, it presents various elegant mathematical theories and notions.

Features

  • Provides an accessible introduction to mathematics in art
  • Supports the narrative with a self-contained mathematical theory, with complete proofs of the main results (including the classification theorem for similarities)
  • Presents hundreds of figures, illustrations, computer-generated graphics, designs, photographs, and art reproductions, mainly presented in full color
  • Includes 21 projects and approximately 280 exercises, about half of which are fully solved
  • Covers Euclidean geometry, golden section, Fibonacci numbers, symmetries, tilings, similarities, fractals, cellular automata, inversion, hyperbolic geometry, perspective drawing, Platonic and Archimedean solids, and topology

New to the Second Edition

  • New exercises, projects and artworks
  • Revised, reorganized and expanded chapters
  • More use of color throughout

1. REGARDING THIS EDITION

This is the second edition of this book. Comparing with the first edition (254 pages, year 2008), we have expanded both in scope (398 pages with more topics, sections, subsections, exercises, projects), and in depth (more solutions, justifications/proofs, and constructions).

There are now 280 exercises (190 in the first edition). More importantly, about 140 of them now have full solutions included. This new feature provides valuable guidance for the students as they work independently.

The number of figures was also substantially increased: from about 556 in the first edition to about 740. I find it particularly pleasing that all of the figures are now given in their full color. With that we not only visually enhance the artwork presented in this book, but also make it easier to explain the chronology of our constructions.

Another new feature in this edition are the projects that follow almost every section. They are suitable for more project-based (classes of) students, offering hands-on experience on the topics related to the corresponding sections.

2. GOAL AND TARGET

The primary goal of this book is to indicate the potential of mathematics for generating (visually) appealing objects, providing themes for artistic explorations. The second, equally important goal is to reveal some of the visual beauty of mathematics. The prominence of visual beauty of mathematics as a criterion for choosing the topics we include here defines and justifies the word visual in the title of this book.

Unequivocally, this is a book about mathematics, not about art. The artwork that we present here is mostly to illustrate the potential of mathematics for artistic inspiration.
