Introducing When I Found You
W RITTEN BY CATHERINE RYAN HYDE, WHEN I FOUND YOU is a book about hope in humanity inspired by a story of an abandoned child who found refuge in a complete stranger. First released in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Transworld/Black Swan, When I Found You is one of Hydes many published novels. Its American edition was released in 2011, and a new Amazon Encore edition was released in April of 2013. Since then, it is estimated that the title has sold another 200,000 copies. The book garnered a majority of positive reviews on popular sites such as Goodreads and Amazon, averaging 4 out of 5 stars; it is still being currently read and reviewed worldwide. Hyde is known for writing stories about ordinary people facing real struggles in life or difficulty in the past. Often, these people are setting out on the road to recovery.
When I Found You tells the story of Nathan Bates life, from birth to his adolescent years, as well as his relationship with a middle-aged man who adopted him in his teenage years, Nathan McCann. Their relationship started when Nathan was duck hunting with his golden retriever named Sadie. Nathan found a baby, barely two days old, wrapped in a sweater and almost dying in the woods. The baby survived because Nathan rushed him to the hospital. Nathan desired to adopt him, but custody was given to his grandmother, the mother of the babys mother, Leonora Bates.
Nathan McCann and the childs grandmother had an agreement that one day, the baby would be introduced to Nathan and told that Nathan was the man who found him in the woods. The grandmother also named the baby after Nathan. However, the kid grew up to be rather rebellious because he could not find the right answers in his life and in his past. He even had a three-year juvenile sentence but was able to get out when he turned eighteen. He grew up to be a cold young man who did not open up to his grandmother. Not willing to go back to his grandmother after serving a juvenile sentence, the young Nat meets Nathan again, who, despite the rude behavior brought about by Nats age and circumstances, opens his home for him and gives his full love and support for him.
