Dear Reader,
You probably bought this book in hopes of learning more about your IQ and intelligence in general. In the United States, intelligence testing has come up against more negative publicity than in just about any other country in the world, leaving many adults with only a vague idea of where they stand intelligence-wise.
I wrote this book not only to help those who are curious about their IQ take several tests to determine their range of intelligence, but also to provide resources and additional information about IQ testing and intelligence. Ive endeavored to create a comprehensive collection of tests that cover the entire spectrum of moder n intelligence testing.
Its a good idea not to put too much stock in a single score, however, because while someone with a high IQ does have an advantage in life, it no more guarantees success than a low IQ guarantees failure.

A Note to
the Reader
After each test in this book, youll find the following paragraph:
Its important to keep in mind that since this test is not given under controlled conditions and has not gone through rigorous standardizing and normalization, it cannot give a true IQ score. The score given on this test is merely meant to be an indicator of how you might perform on an IQ test. Your obtained score should only be interpreted as a broad estimate of your intelligence.
Because of the limitations of the printed form, the tests in this book cannot be as accurate as a professional IQ test administered by a licensed psychologist. For adults, the gold standard in IQ testing is the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The WAIS is now on its third version and is generally considered to be the most thorough test available. Unfortunately, it can be cumbersome to find a local psychologist who is willing to administer it and the costs can be substantial. They range from $200 all the way up to $500, depending on where you live.
Great strides have been made in online testing, which may offer you a more affordable approach to IQ testing. The proliferation of online IQ tests spurred the American Psychological Association (APA) to put together an ad hoc committee called the Task Force for Psychological Testing on the Internet. The APAs Board of Scientific Affairs and Board of Professional Affairs established the task force in 2001 to inform psychologists about the state of Internet testing. Their findings show that there are some functional, fair and reliable tests online, provided they follow the basic principles of reliability and validity.
