    German Practice Book

    Dear Reader,

Learning a different language is a daunting endeavor, but it is not an impossible one. I got a late start in learning languages. When I was in high school, I was too busy to take a foreign language. Now I can read seventeen different languages! The secret to learning a language is practice.

This book will help you practice German. It is a systematic compilation of class notes and materials that I have used in teaching the German language. As you complete the exercises and listen to the CD, you will find that you retain both the grammar and the vocabulary.

The rules may seem hard at first, but as you continue to work through the exercises, they will become easier and easier. To aid this process, you will not only be translating English into German, but also German into English.

If at all possible, visit a German-speaking country like Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, where you can become part of a culture where the German language is the norm. If that isn't practical, make a reservation at a German restaurant and be sure to order in German. How about Schlachtplatte and Schwarzwlder Kirschtorte, or Westphalian ham with buttered bread and Steinhger? What about some Linsensuppe or heier Kartoffelsalat? Or how about Gulasch, Sauerbraten, Wienerschnitzel, Brunswick Mettwurst, Torte, Ksekuchen, Kartoffelkle, and Apfelstrudel?

The German language is a powerful, regal, and elegant language to learn. With consistent practice, I know that you will increase your German proficiency. Have fun!

For my daughter, Jill, who spent much of her summer vacation helping me with this project and who was then inspired to take German as her college foreign language. I love you.

    Acknowledgments

I'd also like to thank Kate Powers for her help in the completion of the project. Thank you for your professionalism and kindness.

    Introduction

Picture 3 This book presupposes that you already have begun learning German. You have learned basic vocabulary and grammar, but now you're ready to increase your German proficiency. That means practice.

Though this book is not a German grammar book, you will be provided with some grammatical clues that you need to remember. In fact, the exercises in this book are specifically designed to help you understand German grammar and, of course, to learn more German words. Each chapter deals with a part of German grammar, such as the article, the noun, the pronoun, and the preposition. It's best to begin with Part 1 and continue through the book without skipping sections, as each part builds on the one before.

Along with the written exercises, you will find other exercises on your audio CD. Listen to each exercise as many times as you like. Hearing the spoken words will greatly enhance your own understanding of the language. By listening to the German pronunciation and repeating the words yourself, you will acquire the language at a much more rapid pace.

Whether you are studying German in high school or college or learning it on your own, you will find that your proficiency provides all kinds of new opportunities. Wanting to take a trip to Germany? Maybe you are a transfer student to a German-speaking country. Or perhaps you want to be able to read German literature. It is incredible to read a work such as Goethe's
