Chapter1 - Types of African-American or Black Hair

The African-American hair care productsmarket is getting bigger and bigger with every passing day. It ishuge business and there are big profits to be earned in launchingnew products for this market. Choosing between the varieties ofproducts available becomes quite difficult, especially if you dontknow what type of black hair you have.

When you know what your hair type is, you canpick the right shampoo, conditioner and hair treatment products foryour hair. Choosing the right products will help provide thenecessary amount of moisture and strength to give you healthy andstylish black hair.

ANDRE WALKER HAIR TYPING SYSTEM

Probably the first person to introduce thehair type theory for black hair is Andre Walker. He is OprahWinfreys hair stylist and dedicated a whole chapter to hair typesin his book Andre Talks Hair.

Walker says that the best way to choose theright style and treatment for your hair is to know exactly what youare working on. Its only when you know your hair type, would youknow what to do with it.

Andre Walker presented four types of blackhair. Lets take a look at these four types.

Type 1 Straight If your hair is completely straight you havethe type 1 hair - photo 4

Type 1 Straight

If your hair is completely straight, you havethe type 1 hair type. This type of hair can range from fine andfragile to coarse and thin and doesnt curl. It is quite easy tocare for. And since it is resistant to curling, you dont need toworry about losing the straight look.

Type 2 Wavy

Wavy hair has soft, deep waves. It has alittle bit of curl or maybe no curl. The hair texture tends to becoarse and doesnt have a lot of body.

If you have this type of hair, usemoisturizing shampoos and a deep conditioner. Try to use a leave-inconditioner to moisturize it properly and prevent the dull andcoarse look.

A moisturizing hair gel or serum will helpadd bounce to the waves. Avoid blow dryers. If you do have to useone, do so on a low setting. Regular trimming will ensure that yourwaves form beautifully. Use a good boar bristle to comb yourwaves.

Type 3 Curly

Curly hair is fine and soft. The hair has alot of body, but doesnt have much shine. This type of hair isfrizzy and flyaway.

If you have curls, use a good moisturizingshampoo with a deep conditioner. A leave-in conditioner after everywash will ensure hydration. Allow your hair to dry on its own.Avoid using towels. Use wide-tooth combs to keep them manageable.Moisturize your hair daily.

Type 4 Kinky

The kinky hair type is tightly curled. Itranges from tight coils to Z-angled coils. Of all the hair types, this one is the driest and the most fragile.

Avoid styling this hair type too much. Use ahydrating moisturizer daily. Wash and use a deep conditioner onceevery week. Dont rush while detangling your hair. Use a wide-toothcomb to detangle your hair when it is wet and coated withconditioner. Use styles where you dont have to comb your hair on adaily basis.

MIZANI CURL KEY

Another useful guide for finding your hairtype and texture is the Mizani Curl Key. Just take a look at theimages below and find out what type of black hair you have.

Type 1 Straight to Minimal Wave This type of hair lacks body or volume - photo 5

Type 1 Straight to Minimal Wave

This type of hair lacks body or volume, growsdown from the scalp, and is less prone to frizz. Its texture canrange from thin to thick.

Type 2 Open Wave

Open wave type has some body and volume. Itusually has an end-wave curve movement. It is less prone to frizzand its texture can range from thin to thick.

Type 3 Wavy

Wavy hair is prone to frizz. It has moderateelasticity and possesses some body, volume or end-wave curvemovement.

Type 4 Curly

Prone to frizz, curly hair possesses body, volume and bounce, and moderate elasticity.

Type 5 Very Curly

This is often a combination of thin to thickhair. It grows down from the scalp and then curls. Some movement isthere, but volume is not much. The hair has low elasticity and islikely to frizz and tangle.

Type 6 Coiled

Another combination hair, the coiled hairtype has some volume but less movement. It is prone to frizz andtangle although not as much as the curly types.

Type 7 Very Coiled

This hair type curls right from the scalp. Ithas minimal volume, low elasticity, no movement, and somecompaction. It is frizzy, tangles easily, and is prone toknots.

Type 8 Zigzag Coiled

The zigzag type of hair is compact with nomovement. It is frizzy and tangled and prone to knots although notas much as Type 7.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS

Once you are clear about the type of yourblack hair, you can choose the right kind of moisturizing shampoo, deep conditioner, and leave-in to maintain healthy hair.

While picking a hair product, make sure thatit doesnt feel greasy. Products that are greasy are likely to notadd moisture to your hair and they will just sit on top of thehair. They clog the pores in your scalp and only make your hairfeel heavier.
