Introducing The Obesity Code
T he Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss was published in the spring of 2016. The book was written by Dr. Jason Fung, and it revolves around Fungs theory that obesity is caused by hormonal shifts within the body rather than by excessive caloric intake. These hormonal shifts cause insulin spikes, which in turn cause the body to protest by gaining weight. Fung breaks down his theory into sections within the book, and each section touches on different portions of the obesity issue.
The Epidemic is the title of the first section of Fungs book. This section details how our society today has become so obese or overweight. The Calorie Deception is the title of the second section of Fungs book. This section details Fungs idea that obesity is not a CICO, or calorie intake, calorie outtake, problem. Fung is adamant about insisting individuals can lose weight without counting one single calorie. According to Fung, calories are different, and can thus affect bodies differently. This section also touches on how exercising and overeating both affect weight loss.
A New Model of Obesity is the title of the third section of the book. This section has a few different chapters, the first of which is dedicated to giving readers hope for a thinner future. He offers the science behind his theory that both obesity and type 2 diabetes are caused by hormonal shifts within the body, rather than by caloric intake. He references both insulin and cortisol. Apparently the two hormones work in tandem, rather like a snowball effect. If there is too much cortisol in the system, it causes a rise in insulin levels. Increased insulin levels can then cause both weight gain and diabetes. Fung refers to this as insulin resistance. This section also references the Atkins diet.
The Social Phenomenon of Obesity is the title of the fourth section of the book. Fung references the increase in poverty statistics within our country. Childhood obesity is mentioned as a major issue in society today. Fung infers that it starts during the mothers pregnancy with her eating habits. He then references the food industry, and how it affects the diets of individuals today.
Whats Wrong with Our Diet is the title of the fifth section of the book. The first chapter in this section expounds on how fructose is more deadly than other forms of sugar. The second chapter in this section showcases Fungs aversion to diet soda and explains how unhealthy it is to drink. The third chapter in this section references carbohydrates and protective fibers in the diet, while the fourth chapter in this section refers to proteins in the diet. The last chapter in this section details how particular fats can be part of a diet, and when they shouldnt.
The final section of the book is appropriately titled The Solution. This section is all about what one should and shouldnt eat, and when one should and shouldnt eat. This is also the section that details in length how fasting should become part of ones diet. Fung has five rules individuals should follow when eating and fasting. The first rule is to lower the amount of extra sugar being consumed in the diet. The second rule is to lower the amount of grains being consumed. Both extra sugar and grains can cause increases in insulin levels rather quickly, and this obviously isnt healthy. The third rule is to pay close attention to the amount of protein being consumed in the diet. The fourth rule is to add more natural fats to the diet. And lastly, the fifth rule is to add more protective factors to the diet. Examples of protective factors are vinegar and fiber.
According to Dr. Fung, individuals should strongly consider adding fasting to their diets. Fung states that intermittent fasting can be quite helpful. Fasting for 24 hours or more, routinely, can help individuals to lessen high levels in insulin within their bodies. This in turn can lower insulin resistance, and it can help individuals lose weight. For more information and details on how to appropriately add fasting to ones diet, readers can look to another of Fungs books. The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting was released approximately six months after The Obesity Code in the fall of 2016. Co-authored by Jimmy Moore, this book offers readers every single morsel of information necessary to effectively and safely fast. Jimmy Moore is an online podcast and health blogger of Livin La Vida Low Carb. At one point he weighed over 400 pounds, and he lost just under 200 pounds by following the Atkins Diet.
