Botanical Arrangement of the Species

At the end of his book, Dr. Merrill included a botanical arrangement of plants with page and figure references. To accommodate to the changes in nomenclature which have been made since the book's first publication, this list has been brought up to date.

The format of the list is as follows: The first scientific name in each listing is that used by Merrill in his book and the plates. Then come references to pages and figures in the text. Scientific names in brackets are those that differ from Merrill's but that are presently acceptable according to Index Kewensis. The authorities for the Pteredophyta (ferns) are R. E. Holtum, Ferns, Flora of Malaya, vol. 2 (Singapore: Government Printing Office, 1954) and E. B. Copeland, Genera Filicum (Waltham, Mass.: Chronica Botanica, 1947). Following present-day preferred usage, species names are given in lower case. Where Merrill's nomenclature is still acceptable, bracketed names do not appear.

The Publishers wish to thank Beatrice H. Krauss of the Lyon Arboretum, University of Hawaii at Manoa, for her kindness in preparing this updated reference list of plant names.
