Introduction
Chances are, youve already tried a natural remedy, maybe without knowing it. Put aloe on a burn? Check. Popped a piece of ginger gum to ease nausea? Check. Iced a sore ankle? Check. Natural remedies are all around us. Once we tap into their power, its amazing what can happen. But how do we use them to achieve results? Thats what this book is all about.
Because you are reading this book, you obviously have questions about natural remedies and how they may work for you, whether you have a specific condition or complaint, want to be prepared, or want to improve your overall health. What are the benefits of natural remedies? What should you take for your condition? And finally, when should you see your doctor? Well cover all of that here and more.
How This Book Is Organized
This book is divided into two major parts.
Part 1, The Wonderful World of Natural Remedies, is five chapters that give you an overview of everything to do with natural remedies. To help you understand natural remedies better, Ive provided introductory chapters that give you a general foundation. These chapters introduce you to the ins and outs of natural remedies, including how food can be used as medicine, when supplements can be useful, important herbs to be aware of, and alternative therapies that are most effective.
We start with an introduction to natural remedies, to give you a feel for the topic. We discuss the differences between natural and conventional medicine and what you can expect when you use natural remedies. We consider the important role food plays as a foundational component and how supplements can help provide a safety net for missing nutrients. We also list the herbs used most often, with a little history so you learn more about what they can do to improve health. We cover the benefits of alternative therapies that are discussed throughout the book, including acupuncture, aromatherapy, homeopathy, flower essences, qigong, and yoga.
Part 2, Directory of Conditions and Natural Remedies, is a listing of more than 50 conditions, everything from acne to insomnia to varicose veins. For each condition, we provide a reader-friendly solution made of natural remedies. We talk about the condition and its symptoms; the role of food, supplements, and herbs; and which alternative therapies can be helpful. At the end of each chapter, youll find remedies listed alphabetically, to make them easier to find and put into practice. I also tell you when you should see your doctor: natural remedies arent a substitute for medical caretheyre a helpful adjunct. At the end of each condition, youll find Natural Rx, a listing of supplements and dosages for each condition and, in some cases, where to find specific supplements. All of this makes it easier to put what youve learned into practice.
