How to Use This Book
This book is designed to help you build the skills you need to score well on the part of the ASVAB that is the most importantthe AFQT or Armed Forces Qualifying Test. That test is the first hurdle you face in getting into the military. The AFQT is a subset of the ASVAB.
Your score on this test will make a huge difference in your military experience. First, if you dont score well enough, you wont be considered a viable candidate for enlistment. People with very low scores have no chance of getting into the military.
If you get a very low score, your ability to request a specific job and sign a contract for your preferred job is reduced. The higher your score, the more training and job options you will have. So why wouldnt you try to score the highest you can? A high score gives you much more control of your destiny in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The 50 skills in this book are the ones that are basic to doing well on the AFQT. They are the foundation skills for handling more complex issues and problems that you might encounter on the ASVAB and elsewhere. You can build on these skills to handle more demanding questions that you might find on the test.
To be clear, the test questions that you will encounter in this book are not the exact ones you will find on the AFQT. No book or online practice test has the exact questions that are on the AFQT. Be aware, too, that just taking a few free online tests is not enough to guarantee you a high AFQT score. Its much smarter to work though this book until you are competent in the 50 skills it teaches. You can then apply these skills to many of the AFQT items you will encounter.
A good way to start preparing for the AFQT is first to take the diagnostic pretest. That test will give you a good feel for the kinds of skills you need to succeed on the AFQT. After you complete the test, check the Scoring Sheet to see which answers you got wrong. That will help you to identify which of the 50 skills you should work on first. If you are hesitant about any of your answers, that should give you another indication of where you might be weak, and where you should focus your study time. The Pretest begins on page 13.
After you have identified your weakest skills, find the lessons in this book that are designed to strengthen those skills. Work your way through those lessons, then take the Posttest that begins on page 150. The results will help pinpoint where you have succeeded and where you still might want to review.
The 50 skills covered in this book tend to build on each other, so as you work through each lesson, look for any related skills listed at the bottom of the first page of each lesson. Reviewing the related skills can help you fully understand each skill that you study.
On the download that accompanies this book, there are more practice items for you to take. Go ahead and take them to see how you do. Score each of the tests and review the skill explanations in the book for those items you answered incorrectly.
Use of this book will take you a long way toward a successful AFQT score for military entrance. Good luck in your military career!
What Is the ASVAB?
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is actually a group of individual aptitude tests. Each test measures something that is important for military entrance and/or for acceptance into training programs for certain military jobs. These tests are:
General Science tests the ability to answer questions on a variety of science topics drawn from courses taught in most high schools. The life science items cover botany, zoology, anatomy and physiology, and ecology. The earth and space science items are based on astronomy, geology, meteorology, and oceanography. The physical science items measure force and motion mechanics, energy, fluids, atomic structure, and chemistry.
