To the Student
This book is designed to help you master eighth grade mathematicsand gain the confidence to succeed in math as you move on to higher grades.
Short lessons explain key points, and exercises help you practice what you have learned. To make the most of your study, follow this 5-step plan: First, begin with the Pretest. This will identify areas where you need additional help, as well as areas where your math knowledge is already strong. Second, read the Table of Contents. Seeing which math topics are covered and the order in which they appear will help guide your work. Third, check out at the 10-Week Summer Study Plan.
If you have only a limited time, such as summer vacation, to work through this book, this chart will help you plan your study time. Remember, the Study Chart is only a guide for you. You may cover some lessons more quickly, and you may need to spend more time on other lessons. Fourth, pay particular attention to the hints youll find when you see the word Remember. These will help you remember key points that can make your math work easier. Fifth, take the Posttest.
Your results will show you which math topics youve masteredand whether there are any topics that you need to return to and study again. Finally, remember the old saying Practice makes perfect. In mathematics, practice may not guarantee perfection, but its sure to sharpen your skills, build your confidence, and make you the better math student you want to be.
10-Week Summer Study Plan
Many students will use this book as a summer study program. If thats what you are doing, here is a handy 10-week study plan that can help you make the best use of your time. When you complete each days assignment, check it off by marking the box.
Each assignment should take you approximately 30 minutes.
Pretest
Complete the following test items. Kathy runs 16 miles a week. If she continues to run at this rate, how many miles will she run in a year?
The womens clothing department at Ms. Smiths store had a sale on jeans. There were 945 jeans in stock at the beginning of the sale and another 254 jeans were ordered. At the end of the sale the store still had 245 jeans in stock.
How many jeans were sold during the sale? Jack has 16 lengths of rope. Each is meters long. How much rope does Jack have to divide among 20 people? How much rope will each person receive? David has 176 ounces of hot sauce to divide among the 32 contestants in a chicken-wing eating contest. How many cups is that per contestant?
