Chapter 1 What You Need to Know About the Nutritarian Diet
One of the most popular diet programs nowadays that is claiming to provide quick, effective results is the Nutritarian Diet. This is also called as the Nutrient-Dense, Plant-Rich Diet (NDPR). This type of diet aims to promote nutrient-filled plant foods and limit the intake of processed, high-calorie foods. NDPR also advocates to ban snacking and drinking of alcoholic beverages. Many dieters claim that the Nutritarian Diet can help reduce weight and manage cardiovascular diseases. There are also claims that this diet can help slow the aging process and increase life expectancy. If you want to know more about the Nutritarian diet, continue reading below.
The Nutritarian Diet
In 2003, a family physician named Dr. Joel Fuhrman coined the term "nutritarian". He then introduced the concept of the Nutritarian Diet in his top-selling diet book Eat to Live. According to him, the Nutritarian diet is a vegan, gluten-free, low-sodium (salt), and a low-fat diet. This diet is branded as a plant-based, disease-fighting eating strategy that a person can utilize to stay in optimal health. This six-week diet suggests avoiding processed foods and giving more focus on eating nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods. Nutrient-dense foods are those that are rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
The general premise of the Nutritarian Diet is Health = Nutrient Intake per calorie (H=N/C). This premise means that a persons long-term health relies on the nutrient content of each calorie he consumes. This eating strategy focuses more on plant-based foods since they contain the highest levels of micronutrients per calorie.
The four core principles of the Nutritarian are:
Nutrient Density
- This ranks different food groups according to their nutrient content per calorie. Typically, cruciferous greens as cauliflower, kale, and broccoli rank the highest while cola drinks the lowest.
Nutrient Adequacy
- This means consuming all the nutrients vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs.
Toxin Avoidance
- This is how you try to eliminate deadly food ingredients, carcinogens, and infectious agents in your usual diet. These toxins are mostly found in processed foods.
Hormonal Favorability
- This involves identifying healthier carbs or carbohydrate sources with low glycemic load and avoiding animal protein such as pork and beef. This is to regulate the levels of specific hormones in the blood that cause different kinds of cancer, increased fat storage, and blockage of the arteries.
According to Dr. Fuhrmans Eat to Live book, the Nutritarian Diet can help manage chronic, irreversible diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. His book also claims that Nutrient-Dense, Plant-Rich Diet (NDPR) can maximally slow the aging process and lengthen life expectancy. Dr. Fuhrman invented the Aggregate Nutrient Density Index (ANDI), a formula that will help dieters identify much healthier food choices. He also developed different products and diet programs in his book, each promising the best results. In just six weeks, Dr. Fuhrman vows that the Nutritarian Diet will make you lose approximately 20 pounds (lbs.) or more. This is the main reason why this diet program manages to keep its popularity high.
