Chapter 1: Getting to Know the Sirtfood Diet
First introduced by Aiden Goggins and Glen Matten, a pair of UK-based celebrity nutritionists, the Sirtfood Diet gains recognition for its claim to turn on the so-called "skinny gene" through a guided diet and health plan. At first glance, it may sound like a gimmicky concept, but it is mostly based on existing research about a group of seven proteins called polyphenols. These proteins are already present in the human body, so the main point of the diet is increasing their levels in the body through the consumption of foods that are rich in polyphenols. Twenty fruits, vegetables, and food products have been identified as the best sirtfoods that must be included frequently in ones meals, snacks, and beverages. Therefore, to unlock the benefits of this diet for your body and mind add the following into your regular grocery shopping list: Birds eye chili Red chicory Red onion Red wine Strawberries Buckwheat Capers Celery Kale Parsley Rocket (Arugula) Lovage Dark Chocolate (at least 85% cocoa) Coffee Green tea (especially matcha) Medjool date Walnuts Extra virgin olive oil Soy Turmeric How do these enhance weight loss? Studies indicate that polyphenols cause mild stress on the cells of your body. This triggers the activation of the skinny genes or sirtuin genes, which normally happens as a result of working out and fasting.
As such, in theory, the more polyphenols you have in your body, the more you lose weight without exerting much effort and without worrying about the loss of muscle mass. So, are the sirtfoods the new superfood? The creators of the diet discourage the practice of deifying certain foods, so the term "superfoods" does not necessarily apply in this case. However, there are extra benefits that you may expect from the sirtfoods since they have high levels of nutrients and plant compounds that are good for the body. Therefore, even outside of this diet, many health experts already have high regard for them. For example: Turmeric Boosts the immune system Protects against chronic inflammation Green Tea Prevents the onset of diabetes and stroke Lowers blood pressure Dark Chocolate Lowers the risk of heart disease Decreases inflammation sites across the body Increases your blood circulation Lower cholesterol Improve cognitive function Reduce sun damage Stocking up your pantry with the right kind of foods is the first step to following the Sirtfood Diet.
