Chapter 1 Optavia Diet 101
Developed and introduced by Medifast, a company that specializes in diets that involve meal replacements, the Optavia Diet promises rapid weight loss through its program that involves special low-calorie pre-packaged foods and dedicated coaching.
If you choose to undergo this diet, you would have to stick to the prescribed meals made by the company and work with lifestyle coaches that know the ins and outs of the Optavia Diet.
This combination of diet and exercise serves as an assurance to its followers that they will not have to undergo fasting and lose muscle mass just to lose their excess weight.
Dubbed as Fuelings, the no-cook/bake meals that the company offers fall under the following categories:
- Cereals
- Cookies
- Pasta
- Protein bars
- Puddings
- Shakes
- Soups
Over eighty variants of Fuelings are available at the moment, all of which have reduced carbohydrate and sugar content compared to their traditional counterparts. Take note, however, that they have managed to do this by significantly lessening the standard portion sizes while also using certain types of artificial sweeteners.
Furthermore, some pre-packaged foods contain soy protein and powdered whey protein to increase their nutritional value.
It is important to note too that you will not be restricted to eating only Fuelings for every single meal of the day. Followers are encouraged to supplement these pre-packed foods with one serving of dishes that has lean meats, green vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, and other kinds of healthy fats.
Whole grains, non-starchy vegetables, fresh fruits, and low/non-fat dairy may also be included in the diet to ensure the proper balance of essential nutrients.
Since Medifast believes that it can provide everything that one might need to lose weight effectively, they also recommend a lot of "Lean and Green" recipes on their official website. Examples of dishes that you can eat to supplement the Fuelings include:
- Chicken Enchilada Rollups
- Mini Mac in a Bowl
- Philly Cheesesteak Stuffed Peppers
- Salmon Burgers with Cucumber Salad
- Zucchini Pizza Casserole
Given that your primary objective for engaging in a special diet like this is to lose weight, the portion sizes declared for the official Lean and Green recipes range from 5 to 7 ounces of cooked meal per serving only. By observing this limit and consuming Fuelings, you will be able to reduce your daily caloric intake to about 1,000 calories only.
To better understand this, here is a quick rundown of a sample Optavia Diet Meal Plan:
- You will eat six small meals each day.
- Five out of these six meals will be comprised of Fuelings.
- The sixth meal will be a home-cooked dish based on a Lean and Green recipe.
The plan described above is one of the three versions of the Optavia Diet that you may choose from. Known as the 5 & 1 Plan, this version would help you reach your weight loss goal by relying mostly on Fuelings.
If you would prefer to have more flexibility when it comes to food choices, then the 4 & 2 & 1 Plan could be a better fit for you. In this version, your daily diet would consist of the following:
- 4 variants of fuelings
- 2 dishes based on the Lean and Green recipes
- 1 healthy snack
Other than more variety in your diet, this version would also provide a bit more calories, which could be great for those who are beginning to transition into a lifestyle that is centered on meal replacements.
For those who want to engage in Optavia Diet but do not wish to lose more weight, then the suggested version is the so-called "3 & 3 Plan". Designed for weight maintenance, this diet plan consists of 3 types of Fuelings and 3 "Lean and Green" dishes every day.
Since ones needs and capacity and differs from one another, Medifast encourages the followers of the Optavia Diet to engage with their trained lifestyle coaches. These individuals offer online guidance, support, and instructions on how to switch your current diet to the one prescribed by the company.
