T he first time I picked up a crochet hook, I was just eight years old. My mother, not the craftiest woman in the world, decided to make a single crochet afghan for my father. Try as she might, she couldnt get the hang of it. The supplies went into a box in the basement, just waiting for me to discover them.

Crochet was my gateway craft, leading me to many love affairs with sewing, weaving, quilting, and knitting. Ive never met a craft that didnt inspire me. Shortly after high school, crafting became more than a way of making things. I was able to teach after-school programs to inspire children to create. In 2008, I opened my first online store, Ultimate Accessories, selling crocheted scarves and accessories. That small business blossomed into a career of designing, writing, and teaching.

During a trip to Colonial Williamsburg, I stumbled into the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. I was greeted by a variety of paintings, sculptures, and other objects, all with a slightly primitive look and feel. Seeing these pieces made by talented, self-trained artists and craftspeople spoke right to my soul. As a crafter, Ive always found such beauty in these timeless pieces of Americana.

Tucked away in a small room was a small collection of early American nonwoven rugs. A large LCD screen played loops of videos showing the techniques used in each of the fifteen or so rugs that hung on the walls behind protective glass. I was smitten.
