SECTION ONE:
What is obesity? - The story behind
What do you understand by the word obesity?Being obese doesnt simply mean that youve put on some extraweight. In medical terms, obesity is defined as the condition inwhich excess amount of fats starts accumulating in body tissues. These unwanted fats exert negative effects on body, leading to manyhealth hazards.
Obesity is a matter of concern because itposes many threats to health. Being overweight contributes toincrease the risks of cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cancers, gynecological problems andstrokes. Gaining weight is easy but to lose it is quite difficult.Treatment of obesity is inevitable for minimizing the risks ofobesity linked diseases. But you cant expect to treat obesity withshortcuts. Youll have to be patient to obtain your desiredresults.
Body mass index (BMI):
BMI is a scale for statistical measurement ofobesity. Its the ratio of body mass in kg to the square of heightin meters. An adult person having BMI ranging from 25-29.9 isconsidered to be overweight. If your BMI is above 30, youreobese.
Causes of obesity - why am I getting fat?
High caloric foods:
The main culprit behind this prevailinghealth hazard is the food we consume. The foods youre eating arehigh in calorie. Consuming too much calories leads to weight gain.Your body can handle only a limited number of calories per day. Ifyou eat calories more than your body needs, the extra calories willbe converted to fats.
Sedentary life style:
Just have look at your lifestyle. Youll beable to see that how lazy and sedentary life we are living today. The invention of modern technologies and machines has made us toolazy. We spend our leisure time in watching TV shows, playingcomputer and mobile games. The concept of healthy physicalactivities was forgotten a long ago. Without indulging in somephysical activity, you wont be able to burn the calories that youhave consumed. A report published in American Journal Of Preventivemedicine states:
Children who have television in theirrooms are much more likely to be obese or overweight
The basis behind this report is that suchchildren love to eat while watching television and TV reduces thelevel of physical activities to absolute zero.
Lack of sleep:
Lack of sleep is also responsible for weightgain. When you stay awake for a longer time, your hormones getdisturbed. Imbalance in hormones increases your appetite andcravings for sugary foods.
Medical problems:
Some people gain weight for unknown reason.Obesity can be the outcome of various medical conditions likethyroid problems, Cushing syndrome and Polycystic ovarian syndrome(POS). In such cases, you cant stop gaining weight until you treatthe underlying disease.
Genetic:
Your genes also play a role in causingobesity. If the origin of your obesity is genetic, its verydifficult to treat it.
Age and sex:
Females are more prone to get obese ascompared to males and obesity usually progresses with age.
Three Fs are very common, doctors say. Female, Forty and Fat.
