SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
This is a book for anyone who wants to work with children or who needs to improve their knowledge of current policy and practice aimed at safeguarding children and young people. In this valuable addition to the Social Work Skills Series, Corinne May-Chahal and Stella Coleman bring together their considerable teaching and practice experience to provide a reliable and practical guide to child protection work.
Safeguarding Children and Young People covers the range of practice issues raised by child maltreatment that will confront frontline workers in child care and related fields. These include:
maltreatment assessment and risk management
achieving inclusive anti-discriminatory practice
working therapeutically with children
working together with parents
legal requirements and going to court.
Sources of support are highlighted and practical suggestions are made throughout the book for practitioner survival and development.
This core text takes an evidence-based approach to child protection and makes use of contemporary research policy and case studies. It is also a practical aid to learning, providing readers with extensive exercises to evaluate their progress.
Corinne May-Chahal is Professor of Applied Social Science at Lancaster University and Stella Coleman is Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Central Lancashire.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Corinne May-Chahal (previously Wattam)
Professor of Applied Social Science
BA Hons (Sociology), DASS, CQSW, PhD
Following seven years in practice as a social worker and three years as a research practitioner, Corinne became NSPCC Research Fellow at Lancaster University, continuing research for policy development in relation to child care and protection. Early work concerned the nature of evidence in cases of offences against children and membership of the Home Office Steering Group that drafted the Memorandum of Good Practice for Interviewing Children in Criminal Proceedings. Subsequently, she became Co-ordinator of the Concerted Action on the Prevention of Child Abuse in Europe (CAPCAE). Corinne joined the University of Central Lancashire in 1998 as Professor of Child Care. Since then she has managed or participated in further EU-based projects including the Control and Use of Personal Information on Child Sex Offenders (CUPICSO), Social Inclusion and Family Support (SIFS) and PANDORA, a comparative project on the use of confidentiality in relation to reporting child maltreatment. As a result of this work Corinne was invited to be a temporary task adviser to WHO European and World consultations on child abuse. She has published widely on the subject of child protection.
