Acknowledgments

The 1975 version of this handbook, authored by Gerald E. Sherwood, is the basis for this edition. Staff members of the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) National Research Center (NRC) contributed to portions of the handbook. The FPL staff included Anton TenWolde (energy efficiency and moisture control), William Feist (finishes), and Rodney De Groot (wood deterioration and preservation). The NRC staff, including Ralph Lee Smith and Dr. Robert Stroh (now with University of Florida), authored major additions to the handbook. Daniel Cassens, Purdue University, contributed to several sections. Alan Freas, a retired member of the FPL staff, thoroughly reviewed and made suggestions for the finished manuscript. Gerald E. Sherwood, also a retired member of the FPL staff, reviewed the finished manuscript and made useful suggestions.

Major funding for the revision was provided by the USDA Forest Service, with additional funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Energy, and National Forest Products Association. The guidance of the following steering committee members is acknowledged:

Dr. Robert Stroh (formerly NAHBNRC)
Dr. Jane S. LinFu (Department of Health and Human Services)
Nelson Carbonelle (Department of Housing and Urban Development)
Gene De La Torre (Department of Energy)
Ward Hitchings (formerly American Forest and Paper Association)
