Moreover, 35 percent of all businesses in the United States use Skype as their primary means of communication.
These numbers point to one simple fact: you need The Essential Digital Interview Handbook! This book, the first one of its kind, will cover everything you need to know, including:
  • How to prepare for your digital interview

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Theres no question that this book would never have happened if it werent for the constant support of my family and friends. I want to thank my wife, Kathleen, and our wonderful children, Connor and Kaitlyn, who allowed me to miss baseball games, soccer games, and quality family time while Daddy wrote a book to help others. Thank you to the rest of my family and friends who keep me energized, excited, and moving forward.

To the team at Career Press, thank you. To Adam Schwartz, my acquisitions editor, thank you for bringing life to my book. A special thank-you to Kirsten Dalley, whose wisdom and creative editing added significant value to the book. I could not have done it without you.

And to Gareth Esersky at the Carol Mann Agency, thank you for taking my call, meeting me at the bookstore, and making the book deal happen. Next stop: world book tour!

Finally, a big thank you must go to Amanda Stoll. Amanda helped to organize and edit all the material on my previous book, The Essential Phone Interview Handbook, and, after much success on that project, has come back to assist with my second book. Her experience using Skype to conduct her own job search from Bangkok has made her a key player in assembling and refining the content. Her detail-oriented nature and her intelligent sense of humor brought grammatical structure and witty examples to this book, making it one that can be easily understood and applied to virtually all readers. Thank you, Amanda, for all your hard work.

    FOREWORD

People say that 50 percent of getting any job is getting the chance to sit across the desk from the hiring manager. Seems right to me, but over the years, it has also been my experience that in their desire to get there, lots of candidates are so focused on that objective that they forget about the first 50 percent, or at least they take a lot of it for granted.

People think that the name of the game, especially in these cyber times, is to get a resume and then fire salvo after salvo into the ether and wait for a phone call, e-mail, or text messagean oversimplification perhaps, but sad to say, not all that far off.

To say that the competition for opportunities in todays marketplace is intense would be an understatement. What many of us dont think about when we find ourselves involved in this competition is that the first 50 percent is even tougher than the second 50 percent. After all, think of how many competitors get screened digitally or otherwise before they become one of the four to six finalists who actually get to sit across the aforementioned desk. Your percentages are a lot better when you are in the face-to-face stage than if you are one of the 200, plus or minus, who are actually contacted out of the thousands who apply.

There is also a saying that the definition of luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Whether it is Skype, Google Hangout, Facebook, video conferences, or Google glasses, the degree to which you understand and master how to present yourself effectively in todays digital world will determine your ability to make it from the first 50 percent to the second.
