About the Author
Michael Pauken is a senior mechanical engineer at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), an operating division of the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) in Pasadena, California. He develops spacecraft thermal control systems and balloon systems for exploring other planets in the solar system. He enjoys flying model rockets, but they never seem to make it into orbit. He is also a lecturer in Mechanical Engineering (ME) at CalTech, teaching courses in thermodynamics and heat transfer.
Before joining JPL, he was an assistant professor in ME at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
He received his PhD in ME from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, gave him a bachelor of science in ME in exchange for a large sum of cash (and passing a lot of classes).
He has been a member of ASHRAE, ASME, and AIAA professional engineering societies and is a registered professional engineer.
Dedication
To Frances and Victor, my little heat engines.
Authors Acknowledgments
Although writing itself is a solitary effort, it takes a team of players to make it presentable. I thank the folks at Wiley who made this book possible: Erin Mooney, my acquisitions editor; Chad Sievers and Chrissy Guthrie, my project editors; Christy Pingleton, my copy editor; and James Mayhew and Michael Moorhead of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, my technical editors. Traci Cumbay deserves special thanks for her advice, questions, and way with words.
I could not have written this book without the teachings and discussions on thermodynamics from my mentors and colleagues from long ago: Dr. Sheldon Jeter, Dr. Said Abdel-Khalik, Dr. Jim Hartley, and Dr. Theo Alexander.
I owe a million thanks to my students who made numerous contributions to this book by working examples, writing out equations, looking up information, and even writing a few parts of chapters Keir Gonyea, Teri Juarez, Grace Li, and Lin Li. You are the next generation of engineers.
