Introduction
Shawna needed to relax. She found a can of beer in the refrigerator. Shawna sighed as she popped open the top of the can. She had just failed another exam in school. She was bored there, and she felt dumb. Her father had started to call her stupid. He had lost his job and was drunk nearly all the time. Shawna's mother worked two jobs to make ends meet. Shawna hardly saw her at all. Shawna spent most of her time with her friend Christina, drinking and talking. Drinking made Shawna forget about her problems at home and at school. Christina was not a very good friend, but she was very popular. She was always being invited to parties. Sometimes she'd take Shawna along. At one party, Christina introduced Shawna to Danny, a

senior in high school. He was tall, and he smiled a lot. Shawna found him easy to talk to. They began spending all their time together. Danny helped Shawna with her schoolwork, and she started to feel better about herself She didn't have as much time to spend with Christina and was drinking less and less. Danny had told her drinking never solved anything, and she believed him.
On their last night together before Danny went off to college, he told her that he loved her. Shawna was thrilled. For the first time in her life, things were looking up for her. She was doing well in school, and she was in love with Danny. She thought about going to college and getting away from her father. She promised Danny she would write.
After she missed her third period, Shawna began to suspect she was pregnant. With her mother always at work and Danny at college, she had no one to talk to. Shawna was scared of what her father would do if he found out. She was ashamed to tell her mother. Sure that Danny would be upset, she stopped writing to him. She was afraid to have the baby and afraid to consider having an abortion. She was confused and didn't know what to do. She started wearing baggy clothes to hide her pregnancy. She didn't go to the doctor. She decided to pretend that nothing had changed.

Shawna became very depressed and started drinking again. She hardly ever went out except to drink with Christina. She lost interest in school and everything else. When the baby began to kick inside of her, each time she would start to cry and reach for a drink. What was she going to do with a baby?
