Preface
In my 24 years of coaching basketball at the intercollegiate level, I've had the opportunity to work with a number of outstanding players. In the process, I've observed that several factors affect the level of success that these individuals are able to achieve. Two of the primary factors are the on-the-court system in which they play and the steps used to ensure that the players are able to execute the system as planned. Accordingly, one of the main reasons, I wrote this book is to provide coaches at all competitive levels with the information they need concerning zone presses and a comprehensive tool for teaching this information.
Zone Press Variations for Winning Basketball(2nd edition) presents an overview of all types of the zone press: the full-court zone press, the three-quarter-court zone press, and the half-court zone press. Profusely illustrated, the book shows coaches how to align their personnel in each of the various zone presses. The book also presents a method for disguising your zone press so that it will confuse your opponent. The steps for regrouping your team to prevent a score if another team breaks your zone press are also explained thoroughly. Furthermore, throughout the book, the basic fundamentals of individual defense are reviewed and reinforced so that you can teach the zone press more effectively. Finally, the book features a substantial number of drills which have been diagrammed to facilitate your efforts to teach and install zone presses into your defensive scheme.
Zone Press Variations for Winning Basketball(2nd edition) features information I have used successfully during my more than two decades of coaching. The zone press variations presented in this book are designed to provide coaches with every possible "look" on defense, thereby creating a very difficult dilemma for their opponents. Using multiple variations of the zone press gives your opponent the almost impossible task of deciding how to counter so many defenses in a ball game. In addition, the book provides coaches of less talented teams the chance to beat stronger teams by keeping their opponents from playing the style of game they want to play and by forcing them into making numerous turnovers during the game.

Chapter 1
Shaping the Zone Press
The zone press, one of the most potent weapons in basketball, is the primary reason that I have been able to win. Throughout my tenure in coaching basketball at all levels, I have found many reasons why I believe that the zone press has helped me become successful.
One of the main reasons we use the zone press is that it confuses the opponent. We have yet to find a team that is totally prepared to combat our variety of presses in a ball game. We may be in a full-court zone press one minute and the next minute change to a half-court zone press. We may use as many as ten different types of presses against an opponent in one ball game. This has thrown our opponents off their game many times. They get to a point where they completely lose their composure and self-destruct. We played one ball game against a team that seemed unaffected by one of our full-court zone presses. They were leading by seven points when we changed to a three-quarter-court zone press. They maintained their lead and we changed again to a half-court zone press. Suddenly, it was all over. By changing zone presses we found a press for which they were not ready. We won the game by 11 points.
