Professor Sven Eric Jrgensen passed away on 5 March 2016, while this book was going to press. It was untimely and saddening for all of us here at CRC Press; anyone who knows his work and his outstanding contribution to the Environmental Sciences literature will also recognize this loss.
I feel fortunate and blessed to have known Professor Jrgensen personally as a great author, a visionary book series editor, and an exceptional mentor. Endlessly creative, searching, and challenging, the books he has written and edited during his career will remain a testament to his character.
Thank you, Professor Sven Eric Jrgensen, for your numerous prized works that have enabled so many readers and young scientists to explore the meaning of ecology and environmental management with such passion!
With gratitude,
Irma Shagla Britton
Senior Editor for Environmental Science and Engineering
This book follows the basic ideas of the textbook Integrated Environmental ManagementA Transdisciplinary Approach by S.E. Jrgensen, J.C. Marques, and S. Nors Nielsen. Environmental management should accordingly be based on seven steps that integrate examination and quantification of an environmental problem and the use of ecological diagnostic tools to develop a diagnosis for ecosystem health, followed by the considerations of using a selected combination of all the applicable toolboxes for the solution of the environmental problem. The textbook presented details on all of the seven steps applied on environmental problems in general. The problems associated with discharge of toxic substances are, however, particularly difficult and complex to solve because there are more than 100,000 different chemical compounds used in a modern industrialized society. It is then implicit that knowledge regarding the important environmental properties of all these chemicals should be available to accomplish the seven steps properly. However, we do not have this enormous knowledge yet, and so we are therefore forced to find some shortcuts to ecotoxicological problems. This book presents in detail how, under these constraints, we could still use the seven steps and set up integrated, holistic environmental management for ecotoxicological problems. This approach would require extensive use of ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry, which are the core topics of the book. Therefore, the book has chapters covering environmental chemical calculations, the QSAR estimation methods, and how toxic substances can interfere with other general environmental problems. There are also chapters focusing on the use of diagnostic ecological subdisciplines and the applicable toolboxes for the solution of environmental problems (environmental technology, ecotechnology, cleaner technology, and environmental legislation). It is my hope that the two books will supplement each other and this book is able to demonstrate that, in spite of the complexity of the seven steps, when the problem is discharge of a toxic substance, integrated environmental management is still applicable.
