Table of contents
Do you want to inculcate one habit that will give you handsome returns throughout your life? This one habit will lead to improvement and progression in your career, whatever your career choice is. It will enable you to be a better student, and a better teacher, a better patient, and a better doctor, a better writer, and a better reader, a better caretaker, and a better care giver, a better business man, and a better social worker, and overall a better human being.
The habit will stand you in good stead throughout your life, once you have adopted it. And whats more, you can commence this habit, whatever is your age or situation in life. There are no pre-qualifications, and the results are always stellar.
Each habit has its cost. Both good habits and bad habits take some toll. You have to get up early, if you are an early morning exercise person. It is a good habit. You have to incur health care costs, if you get into bad habits of overeating or smoking. Same is true for every habit, be it involved with creativity, body building, or sports. But this magical habit I am talking of, costs very little. In fact mostly the money cost is negligible or even nil. Yes you have to invest your time. But the cost is minimal and the returns are spectacular. It gives better returns in long term than any long term investment, in shares, bonds, or real estate you can think of. So much so that in one instant this habit can change your life forever.
This is the power of Reading
Our journey with reading starts the moment we enter schools. Be it private schools or public schools or parents schooling their kids at home, the formal education starts with reading. Only afterwards it enters into the realm of writing, and then into diverse fields of sciences, commerce and arts.
In later years we enter our careers, and get busy with our work. We have to read budgets, and balance sheets. We have to read presentations, and review reports. We have to read out speeches, and office memos.
Then we get married. If we bear kids, the journey starts again. Now we have to teach our kids, and help them through their life and careers.
And finally when we leave this world the priests and preachers will read from the scriptures to bid us farewell.
In this journey of life, a friend accompanies us through out. They are the books we read. They are molding us and guiding us. Along with our well-wishers, our parents and our friends, the books are also our guides.
The course books help us score good marks in academics; the self-help books provide us confidence and motivation, when we need them most. These books help us solve the specific problems of our life, and handle important crisis. They make us aware of the social laws and etiquettes, and enable us to live in harmony with others. They enable us to call ourselves educated.
They take us to fictional worlds, where we can live, eat, play and pray with the characters of a story. They make us laugh and make us cry. They thrill and surprise us, and scare us through horror.
The books are our friends, guides and entertainers molded into one.
Whenever you make an investment, you wish to maximize your returns. Reading is no different. You are investing your money and your time. There is also an opportunity cost. There are so many alternatives available. You could watch your favorite TV show, or play a video game. You could dance or exercise. You could catch a movie with your family or friends. If you are choosing to read instead, you are incurring some good costs. And it is only natural, that you want returns.
The book market today is like the financial markets. So many securities and shares are available. Not all are good. Some are even bogus companies, which are after your money. But on the other hand there are also several gems. These gems can make your life. A right investment can make you a multi-millionaire overnight.
On similar lines, the book market is full of authors, writing on a multitude of topics. A few books can give you cheap thrills, which will give you short term happiness, but may be harmful in the long term. A few books are just trying to cash in on the latest fad or incident. However, somewhere amongst them are a lot of books that are real gems. Like a good security or share; the right book can solve a major long standing problem overnight, and can make you a multi-faceted multimillionaire with peace, happiness and tranquility. But you have to spot the right book. This is the objective of this book.
Let me continue with the analogy of investing. What is the most common mistake that investors do? There are lots of smart investors who spend time and energy in choosing the right investment. They apply all their skills, read financial papers, analyze the balance sheets of several companies, take the help of professionals and are able to zero in on the right investment.
A lot of people fall through after this. There is no follow through. They see the risk and back out. They dont take closing action. Some fare even worse. They take the plunge, and the risk. They see the returns coming. But then, owing to greed, or fear, or pure lethargy, they sell the security too soon. They dont hold it to the end. And what could have given spectacular, amazing and stellar returns, has only given mediocre returns.
Similarly, when you have chosen the right book, the next step is to take the plunge. What does it involve? You need to buy or borrow the book, and start reading.
It is sad how many good books never get bought. It is even sadder that how many good books, are bought and never read. A very large percentage of books are never read beyond the first few pages. They are bought in a certain frame of mind, and then left to be read some other day. The knowledge is there, open and available, but no one is there to grasp it. The book becomes another piece on the book shelf a display of the good taste of the buyer, and nothing more.
I have dealt with several books throughout my life. Not one book has stood up by itself and decided to transfer the embedded knowledge to my head directly. It is always I who had to get up, and muster the courage and energy to read it.
Have you even seen a deer enter the mouth of a hungry lion? It never happens in the real world. The lion has to get up and chase the deer to fulfill its hunger. Similarly you have to get up and read the book, and read it to the end, to fulfill your hunger of knowledge. There is no short cut.
I am a big fan of reading. Can you ever get a friend, who has so much knowledge? Knowledge of astronomy, and astrology, of quantum theory, and relationships management, of the art of war, and the role of meditation, of the theory of relativity, and the psychology of Freud, of the adventures of a small kid, and the struggles of a young girl, of the horrors of Dracula, and a journey in the wonderland. I have no friend or family member who is so knowledgeable. But the books are. And reading helps me garner all this energy, and develop myself as an individual and as a contributor to society.
So why not create your own treasure chest. In this chest keep the books that matter to you. The books that your parents read to you when you were a small child. The books that guided you in your youth. The books that gave you confidence and encouragement. The books that guided you in matters of family, business and career. Keep them together. It can be a short collection, or a big one. Sometimes even one book is enough. Keep these available at hand. Let this be your personal reference library. Your personal treasure chest. Keep it in your cave. And when you leave this world, give these to your kids as a part of your heritage. By then a lot of books may have gone out of print. But they will be there in your treasure chest. And the future generations will be able to learn about you, from these books. Let us try this.
