2nd edition 2016

Dear Reader,

Face it: youre madly in love with data. You cant leave home without it, you play with it every day on your computer, and you carry it with you wherever you go. Youre smitten. Youre whipped. You cant get enough of it. No need to be ashamed. Cause, Ill tell you secret: I love data too.

Connecting business data with the modern user, SAP Gateway is SAPs answer to the busy-bodied wireless (or eternally plugged-in) world. And if SAP Gateway is the bridge to data, then OData is the concrete holding it all together, giving developers the power to liberate SAP data and play matchmaker between data and its users. With this book, youll learn how OData and SAP Gateway can be harnessed to build mobile, social, web, and enterprise applications for popular platforms and devices. So, what do you say? Lets spread the love.

What did you think about the second edition of SAP Gateway and OData? Your comments and suggestions are the most useful tools to help us make our books the best they can be. Please feel free to contact me and share any praise or criticism you may have.

Foreword by Bernd Leukert

Increasing amounts of data have been generated in the past few years and continue to be generated today. Everyone is constantly producing and releasing data, and we are used to having everything available at our fingertips. This is where the digital transformation starts. In fact, about 90% of all global data has been generated in just the past two years, and the worldwide amount of data is to increase tenfold until 2020.

Digitization is rapidly changing how we do business. It changes the way companies create value, interact with their customers and the entire partner ecosystem, and position themselves in established and new markets. This affects the entire value chain of a company down to the suppliers.

To benefit fully from the disruptive power of the digital (r)evolution, the only adequate answer is continuous and profound innovationwhether in a companys organizational structure, processes, or IT systems. To be successful in todays digital economy, companies, no matter the size, have to innovate and rethink their business and business models. They have to drive this change actively by embracing the digital future, and software is and will be the ultimate support for that.

One of the enablers for businesses is SAP Gateway, which is a technology that provides a simple way to connect devices, environments, and platforms to SAP software based on market standards, thus allowing the implementation of new business models. The framework enables the development of innovative solutions with an intuitive user interface, bringing the power of SAP business software to social and collaboration environments, mobile and tablet devices, and rich Internet applications. It offers connectivity to SAP applications using any programming language or model without the need for SAP knowledge by leveraging REST services and OData/ATOM protocols.

When we launched SAP Gateway in 2011, we massively enhanced the extensibility and connectivity of what users could do with our solutions. We enabled them to use the tools of their choice to create, build, and deliver new applications, while at the same time not disrupting existing IT landscapes. Today, the maturity of SAP Gateway is proven: more than 15,000 customers bet on SAP Gateway for bringing unprecedented choice and openness.

Customers arent the only ones betting on SAP Gateway. Major parts of SAP S/4HANA are based on top of the SAP Gateway framework, providing OData services for SAP S/4HANAs SAPUI5-based services.

This second edition of SAP Gateway and OData provides you with a comprehensive guide. I promise youll be surprised to see what you can do using SAP Gateway without even knowing SAP programming languages.

Youll not only get to know the principles, standards, and technologies, but youll also learn how SAP Gateway serves as a basis to tackle the challenges of todays digital transformation.

I wish you an inspiring and enjoyable read.

Introduction

Barely 25 years ago, we all started surfing the World Wide Web. Around the same time, we started using mobile phones on a regular basis. At that time, however, not many people thought about bringing those two technologies together. Even fewer people expected the combination to become as popular as it is today.
