The first edition of this book covered Vonneguts work through 1991. This new and updated edition incorporates his writing through his death, in 2007. Marc Leeds, founder and president of the Kurt Vonnegut Society and a longtime personal friend of the authors, has devoted more than twenty-five years of his life to cataloging the Vonnegut cosmosfrom the birthplace of Kilgore Trout (Vonneguts sci-fi writing alter ego) to the municipal landmarks of Midland City (the midwestern metropolis that supplies the setting for Vonneguts 1973 masterpieceBreakfast of Championsand, later, the locale for neutron-bombing inDeadeye Dick).
The Vonnegut Encyclopediaidentifies every major and minor Vonnegut character (from Celia Aamons to Zog), as well as recurring images and relevant themes from all of Vonneguts works, including his revisionist libretto for Stravinskys operaLHistoire du soldator his 1980 childrens bookSun Moon Star. Leeds provides expert notes explaining the significance of many items, but relies primarily on extended quotations from Vonnegut himself. A work of impressive scholarship in an eminently browsable package, this encyclopedia reveals countless connections readers may never have thought of on their own.

FOREWORD TO THE FIRST EDITION

A working-class Englishman named Ned Ludd, early in the nineteenth century, smashed up some machinery that was making his skills redundant, thus giving our already rich language a word for a person wary of newfangled contraptions, such as myself, which is Luddite. A common irony, a virtually unavoidable irony in these times, is for a Luddite to be a beneficiary of a technological advance. I myself now find my lifes work as a writer, which I made with ink on bleached and flattened wood pulp, transmogrified into something as insubstantial, ephemeral, and yet immortal as the ghost of Hamlets father on a parapet at Elsinor. Electrons. Ah me. What is one to think?

My most recent opus in the Gutenberg medium, Fates Worse Than Death, isnt at this writing all that recent anymore (1991). I set to work on another one, to be called Timequake, but I have been unable to complete it to my own satisfaction, so perhaps it will never be. Civilization will survive in any case. I hoped it to be a tragicomedy (what a language!) about the externalization in the form of compact, reasonably priced, and readily available electronic devices of all that is amusing or economically valuable about the nervous systems of human beings. Memory, given the circumstances that inspire this little essay, is the human capability that first comes to mind. Thanks to my good friend and Professor Marc Leeds, Ph.D., who fed my words to a computer, some machine will remember the two of us long after human beings have stopped giving a damn whether we lived or not.

Ha!

FOREWORD TO THE REVISED
AND UPDATED EDITION

Because I watched him write when he gardened and did carpentry and everything else he did, I know how much my father would love that there is now a second edition of The Vonnegut Encyclopedia. He is doubled over somewhere laughing that he pulled off something much harder than the Brinks robbery. Better than cheating death.

He made something out of nothing, saved his own life in the process, and made lots of people, including me, less lonely. Lots of people.

It reads well, especially for an encyclopedia, because there was a wholeness and seriousness and earnest hard work in my fathers work that resonates. There is very little, if any, tin.

I used to think he was a talented spoiled brat who got lucky and popped out a few good books. Now Im just amazed.

Thanks, Dad.

Thanks, Marc Leeds.

Thanks to anyone anywhere who reads anything.

Mark Vonnegut, M.D.

A NOTE ABOUT THIS SECOND EDITION

The first edition of this encyclopedia appeared in November 1994, when Kurt Vonnegut turned seventy-two years old. I hoped a second edition would be called for when my friend and advocate of twenty years passed the century mark, and I dreamed that there might be twice as many books for me to cover. Sadly, this was not the case. However, Kurt did add to his considerable literary legacy in the thirteen years he lived after this books first publication.

The aim of this second edition is to broaden the original work to include all of Kurts solo publications that appeared during his lifetime or with his explicit approval. All such works since 1994 are included here for the first time, provided they meet the criterion of Kurts having had a direct hand in their publication. The many newly available Vonnegut manuscripts that have been made public in the past several years are not represented here because they are primarily open drafts or refused manuscripts. There is no doubt of their value for those studying Kurts work as it developed. But my goal has always been to present Kurts work as he approved it for publication.

However, I did fill in some entries that escaped the first edition for whatever reason, and with the republication of Hal Irwins Magic Lamp, I have corrected an omission that many fans brought to my attention.

Two texts present exceptional cases for consideration within this text. The first is the teleplay of Between Time and Timbuktu. Kurt did not write the script. He did, however, provide an introductory note to the text, and that is the only material referenced in this encyclopedia. Second, as a rule, I did not include Vonnegut interviews in this encyclopedia, even those published as books, but I made an exception for a self-interview that appears in Palm Sunday.

The other substantive change from the first edition is the conversion of the parenthetical page: line citations to more streamlined chapter number citations. I did so to ensure the encyclopedias utility for all readers, whatever their edition or reading platform may be.
