A Radio Show
July 25, 1936

"Come over here, Tony," said Pop. "You too, Leo. I want you to meet an old friend of mine."
Leo peered out from behind the stack of freshly washed tablecloths he was carrying. The truck driver from the laundry had wanted somebody to pay the bill, but he and Tony had talked him into waiting another day or two.
"Maybe this is somebody who could float Pop a loan," Leo said in a low voice.
Tony shook his head. Nobody would be that dumb. The restaurant business wasn't worth a plugged nickel. People just weren't going out to eat any more. They couldn't afford it. Lots of families didn't even have anything to eat at home.

Every night, after the restaurant closed, men and womenkids toowent through the garbage cans in the alley. They were looking for the scraps and leftovers from the kitchen. Tony could hear them lifting the can lids from his room three floors up.
Pop was still waving at them. The man with him had light brown hair that was getting thin in places.
"Freddy," Pop said, "these are my two no-good sons." He smiled. "Boys, Freddy and I listened to the last messages from the Titanic back in 1912."
"That was my first wireless set," said Freddy. "We sat up for two or three days straight, didn't we, Rocco?"
Tony and Leo looked at each other. They had not heard this story before. "Was this when you lived with the old movie star?" Leo asked.
"Freddy is Nell's cousin," said Pop. "And she isn't old. She's just as beautiful as ever. Isn't she, Freddy?"
Freddy nodded. "I saw her last summer," he said. "I wanted her to come on the radio, but nothing doing."
"Freddy is the head of programming for CBNthe Central Broadcasting Network," Pop told the boys. "And what do you think?"

The boys waited. Pop was always asking them what they thought, but he didn't really want to know. He'd tell them soon enough.
"He's going to broadcast a program from right here in the restaurant."
They were surprised. "You mean like the shows they do in New York?" Tony asked. "With an orchestra and music?"
Pop smiled. "Sure, it will be just like before the Depression."
"Who's gonna pay for that, Pop?" Tony asked.
A year ago, the restaurant had to let go the musicians that played every night at dinner. Mom had finally told Pop they just couldn't afford them anymore.
Pop ignored Tony's question. "We can get most of the old orchestra back," Pop said. "They haven't found new jobs yet."
