Chapter One

One hundred years and counting, Matt said, raising his champagne flute to Radan.

This night marks your coming of age, Sebastian said, smiling.

About the only thing that would come , Radan thought grimly, as he touched his glass to those of his friends.

Matt grimaced. Uh-oh, I know that look. Our boys turning maudlin, what with no honey to hold him.

Behave! Bas chided. Forgive my mate, he can be naughty.

Its why you love me, that and because I give good head.

Sebastian choked on his drink.

Well, it is, Matt said.

Among other things, human-mine. Bas smiled, teasing his talon pointer over his mates wrist.

Matt shivered. I hate it when you do that.

Wasnt what you said to me last night when I used my talon to

Sebastian, please! Matt blushed.

Delightful shade of red, Matt-boy. Radan laughed, watching his friends and their playful love-spat.

Sebastian frowned at his mate. In the time of my youth, such disrespect would be answered with a good flogging.

Whip huh? Matt rolled his eyes. People pay good money these days for a touch of the lash.

Do you now understand what I must endure? Sebastian sighed tiredly, as if Matt had tormented him to the limits of his endurance. He fooled no one, certainly not Radan who had known Bas for five years. Bas loved Matthew with a passion that pushed boundarieseven among kin who loved their mates to deathand beyond.

You have my sympathies. A pesky mate is bad news. Radan swallowed his drink. Maybe you could trade him in, or send him to obedience training?

Bas grinned, his fang tips descending. Hes beyond redemption.

Youve seen to that, Matt said, laughing, before turning his gaze on Radan. So, when you do your readings from now on, youll wear the headscarf?

Radan eyed the gift lying on the table. A purple silk scarf with gold tasselled beads and secret magic writing embroidered around the edges, he recognised Erillas hand in the gift. When the witch and Matt joined forces, everyone at Monsters knew to watch their backs. And if Ley was also involved, expect the worst and best trick or treat.

Bas snorted. Radan doesnt need to resort to cheap theatrics to impress.

But the purple scarf would look so cool with his red hair, Matt answered.

Radan ran a hand unconsciously over his collar length curly hair. The unusual colouring and texture, combined with the short length, denoted his dual heritage. The red originated from his kangaroo shifter mother, the dark grey eyes that could glow crimson were from his vampire father. Everyone insisted that one day hed grow fangs, looking to Jaidyn as an example of a late developer, who now sported an elegant set. Radan realised he was unlikely to ever be so blessed, because his genes were scrambled. And not once had he craved blood.

Tomorrow night the teamll be celebrating your birthday in proper style. Sev and Will, Ray and Taj will also be here. But Kellyn and Alex might be absent, theyre immersed in off-world mate cele Youch! Matt said, reaching down to rub the ankle that Bas must have kicked under the table.

Im unmated and not likely to ever be. Radan shrugged, pretending indifference, hiding his real fear. The guys and gals at Monsters had found their mates, but Radan, having kangaroo and fang blood meant hed never find his true animal, or attract a mate. He walked both worlds and was at home in neither.

Bas reached across the table, his talon stroking Radans hand. Kinsman.

That one word said it all. Radans eyes stung with tears and he looked down. He knew he was loved and had been welcomed into Bass circle unequivocally.
