FOREWORD
It was forty years ago that Sidney Kaplan came into my summer session class at Harvard. Almost immediately I realized that he was out of place, not because he was somewhat older than most of the students, but because it was clear from the first time he spoke that he was both knowledgeable and wise. Long before the end of the summer I regarded him as a colleague from whom I had learned a great deal. He was already into Melville and had read materials and raised questions that were entirely new to me. I was even more fascinated by what he already knew about whaling, not merely because he had read and reread Moby Dick, but also because he was studying the contribution of the humble African American Lewis Temple to the whaling industry through his invention of the toggle. This was regarded by one authority as the most important single invention in the entire history of whaling. If one was interested in the "contributions" of African Americans to American life, Kaplan seemed to be more than adequately informed.
