Abdul Muttalibs Dream

Sacrifice for your Lord, fulfill your vow!

Upon hearing these words in his dream, Abdul Muttalib sacrificed a beautiful ram and distributed its meat to the needy people first thing in the morning. When night fell and he went to sleep, he heard the same voice in his dream, Offer your Lord a bigger and better sacrifice!

Under the influence of the dream, as soon as he woke up in the morning, he sacrificed beautiful cattle and distributed it amongst the poor. However, the same day that he sacrificed the cattle, he heard the same voice in his dream.

In the morning, he sacrificed a beautiful camel, and once again, distributed its meat to the needy. But the same voice was heard again that night, Offer a bigger sacrifice to your Lord!

This time around, Abdul Muttalib questioned the voice: What is the bigger sacrifice?

He was then told, Remember your vow that you made to Allah many years ago. You asked Allah for a son. Your wish was fulfilled. Now fulfill your vow.

After hearing those words in his dream, Abdul Muttalib woke up drenched in sweat. His mind ventured off to the previous years of his life. Time had passed so quickly. Years before, he had another interesting dream, similar to this one. In his dream, the place of the Zamzam well was revealed to him. So with his only son, Harith, he went to the determined place and began to dig in search of the Zamzam well. The elders of Mecca also wanted to participate, and began digging with them. Over the course of history, the Zamzam well that Abrahams wife Hagar found was lost. When the people of Mecca made a big circle around Abdul Muttalib and said, This is a legacy of our ancestor, Prophet Abrahams son, Ishmael, Abdul Muttalib responded to the crowd standing over him, Allah appointed me to this task. He said, I should not allow you all to partner up.

In return they said, Besides your only son, who else do you have to help you and protect you? You should not oppose us in this matter. They threatened him, saying, By Allah, if we fight we will flog you.

Abdul Muttalib responded, You are blaming me for not having many children. I swear to Allah, one day, if I have ten sons and they grow up to protect me, I will sacrifice one of them in the Kaba.

Afterwards, he continued to dig the well with his son Harith. Upon seeing Abdul Muttalibs determined behavior, the people of Mecca understood that they could not take part in finding Zamzam water, and just anxiously waited for the result. At the end of the third day, the walls of the well were reached and Abdul Muttalib showed his joy with exaltation. Afterwards, he continued digging, revealed the water source, and offered it for usage of all human beings, animals, and the whole existence. This case increased the dignity of Abdul Muttalib, a mighty leader whom the people of Mecca appointed for their affairs. In the meantime many years passed and Abdul Muttalib became a father of ten sons. Now through another dream, he has been reminded of his promise in return for his ten sons.

The Day of Drawing Lots

L ittle by little, it began to dawn, and Mecca began to fill with the suns sweet glow. For Abdul Muttalib, one of the most difficult days of his life was about to begin. Under the influence of his night dreams, he was thinking of his boys since he woke up. He was thinking about the worlds most beautiful Abdullah. Unlike his brothers, a light shone out of Abdullahs forehead. Thanks to that light, his beauty became the talk of legends. The light on Abdullahs forehead had before shone on his father Abdul Muttalibs forehead; even before him, it had shone on his grandfather Hashims forehead. This light that belonged to the Last Prophet came from the first created man and first Prophet, Adam, peace be upon him, all the way down to Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, and the most honored of mankind. From Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, it was transferred to his son Ishmael, peace be upon him, and was passed on from son to son until it reached Abdullah. Very little time was left to reach the original owner of this light that was created way before Adams time as well.

When the sun had risen, everybody in Abdul Muttalibs house woke up. The sad father called his sons to his presence; told them about his story of digging the Zamzam and about his vow that he had made to Allah. He was unable to raise his head and spare any of them. After he pulled himself together, he told his children, Now tell me, what do you think about it all?

The children agreed on the same answer and said, O father! If you made such a vow to Allah, you should definitely fulfill it. Whoever you choose from amongst us, we will surely obey you.

Upon hearing this, Abdul Muttalib said, Well then, each of you grab an arrow and write your name on it. We will then go to the Kaba and let the officer cast the lots.

He had murmured and slurred his last words. Abdul Muttalib was going through a severe trial. He felt grief like a storm breaking inside him, but he was holding back his feelings. Under his breath, he was constantly repeating, There is nothing to add to the vow made to Allah. I have to fulfill my vow. While he was walking towards the Kaba with his ten sons behind him, his inner judgment continued in the same manner.

They arrived at the Kaba, the first building and the first sanctuary built for Allah. There, Abdul Muttalib explained to the officer the reason for their visit. Having heard that he was going to sacrifice one of his sons upon casting the lot, the officer was astonished. Abdul Muttalib, the leader of Quraysh, handed over the arrows, and with a lush sound, he said, Draw the lot.

If the officer had not known Abdul Muttalib, he would have tried to deter him from this act. However, there stood the most serious and respected man of Mecca. After looking at the arrows that were handed to him, he picked one of them. He read aloud the name written on the arrow, Abdullah.

Abdul Muttalibs heart burnt. Abdullah was his most beloved son. Nonetheless, he made a covenant with Allah, and thus, the provision was certain and could not be changed.

Holding Abdullahs hand, with the knife in his hand Abdul Muttalib walked toward the place where Abdullah was going to be sacrificed. Regarding the fulfillment of his vow, Abdul Muttalib acted obediently, and his son Abdullah surrendered to his judgment. The leaders of Quraysh who were witnesses, approached Abdul Muttalib immediately and said, What are you trying to do O Abdul Muttalib?

Abdul Muttalib, with a sad yet determined voice said, I am going to sacrifice him.

They intervened, Do not do this! You are respected among us. Today, if you sacrifice your child here, you will start a bad tradition. After this, everyone will start sacrificing their children.
