Islam, the religion of peace and reconciliation, as taught and practiced by the Prophet, comes alive in this book, preserving the pearl of truth from the heart of Quran and Prophet. Adeptly researched facts, free from the rust of lies and distortions are a fresh challenge to the reader; to discover lies about truth, if not truth blackened by lies. The message of his prophetic vision delineates the agony and ecstasy of his passion, which made him not only the Messenger of God, but the lover of the beloved. Many books have been written about the Prophet of Islam, but none so candid as to explore his spiritual heart filled with the light of love, compassion and understanding. The example of his life, as lived in loving-kindness and in perfect harmony with nature and mankind, are the living emblem of his message in this book. Prophet Muhammad: The First Sufi of Islam strives to fill a gap within the historic arena of Islam by touching the fabric of Prophets life as a family man, a loving father and husband.

Chapter 8

The Night Journey to the Throne of the Beloved From 619 to 620 ad

Muhammads heart, bandaged in a prayer-rug of sweet, painful memories, was at peace, as he lay resting on the same bed where he had held Khadija in his arms during her peaceful last moments. A whole year had bounded past in a hurricane of tragedies since the death of Abu Talib and Khadija, and Muhammad had learnt to live with grief.

Now that Abu Talib was no more, Abu Lahab had become the protector of the Kaaba, pumping the bellows of his pride and hatred with a sense of vengeance. In league with Abu Jahl he had begun a fiery crusade of tortures against Muhammad and his followers. Muhammad had managed to send small groups of Muslims to Medina and Abyssinia. He himself had decided to stay in Mecca, praying for a revelation which would grant him permission to leave Mecca in search of a better place for the propagation of Islam.

Right at this moment, sleep was Muhammads sanctuary, his thoughts suspended against mists swollen with memories. Khultum had married Abd al Mottaleb. The mists in his thoughts revealed another face, that of Swadah, now his wife. After Khadijas death, Muhammads aunt Atika had suggested the match. Swadah was a middle-aged woman whose husband Sakran had died suddenly after his return from Abyssinia, and she had been left with no means to support herself. Atika had gone to console the grieving widow, and after listening to her plight had proposed that she marry Muhammad. Since Muhammad was immersed deep in grief, Swadah herself had approached him with the strangest of proposal pleas.

Since you are the protector of orphans and widows, O Messenger of Islam, would you keep and protect me, a homeless widow, as your wife?
