A group of African-American women struggle to cope with having lost their men to the war, and face up to an uncertain future when and if the soldiers return. The Mountaintop: Evokes the doomed humanity of a man whose character has tended to be obscured by myth Katori Halls creative reimagining of Kings last night has energy, humour and moral gravity. Evening StandardHurt Village: A voice for the disenfranchised of America, told by a woman who understands their historical context and has compassion for her characters, but is also realistic about their responsibility in their own fate. The language is visceral, passionate excellent storytelling, bleak but great theatre, extraordinary rhythm, energy, and with something to say.

Judges of the 33rd annual Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, on awarding the prize to Hurt Village. Katori Hall is from Memphis, Tennessee. Her plays include The Mountaintop, which was first produced to great acclaim at Theatre 503, London, in June 2009, and received a transfer to the Trafalgar Studios, London, the following month. It won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2010, and opened on Broadways Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, New York City, in October 2011. Her other plays include Hurt Village (Classical Theatre of Harlem Future Classics Reading Series, BRIC Studio, 2007; Signature Theatre, 2012), Hoodoo Love (Cherry Lane Theatre, New York, 2007), Remembrance (Womens Project/World Financial Center site-specific work, 2007), Saturday Night/Sunday Morning (Classical Theatre of Harlem Future Classics Reading Series, The Schomburg Center, New York, 2008) WHADDABLOODCLOT!!! (Williamstown Theatre Festival), The Hope Well and Pussy Valley.

Her numerous awards include the 2011 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, 200910 Lark Play Development Playwrights of New York (PONY) Fellowship, two Lecompte du Nouy Prizes from Lincoln Center, 2007 Fellowship of Southern Writers Bryan Family Award in Drama, 2006 New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship in Playwriting and Screenwriting, residency in the Royal Court Theatre NYC Playwrights Workshop in 2006, and the 2005 Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award.
