INTRODUCTION
If you searched history to find the moment when shawls were conceived, youd be hard pressed to find it. Shawls have been aroundand belovedfor what feels like forever.
While they were likely created out of necessity in a cold climate and even as they continue to be a practical accessory, shawls also present a world of possibility. They are the perfect canvas for a crocheter to try something new.
A shawl is usually relatively small and structurally uncomplicated, so a challenging pattern can feel less daunting. You can try your hand at crocheting intricate lace with thread, adding beads to your work, or tackling a tricky motif. Or, you can go for simple and sturdy, stitching up practical pieces that work for any occasion. Shawls are truly versatile, as accessories and as a crochet projects, which is probably why their popularity continues to soar.
We are delighted to present this collection of crochet shawls from the best that Interweave books and magazines have to offer. A capelet works to warm your shoulders in the spring. Lacy light shawls offer the perfect layer for a summer wedding. Stitch a bandit-style wrap to warm up your outfit when temperatures drop in the fall. And in winter, when the cold can require a shawl to be worn practically every day, stock up on traditional triangles as well as unique modern shapes in fun colors. Whichever patterns you choose to stitch for yourselfor as giftsyoure certainly in for year-round stitching and shoulders consistently draped in crochet.
happy stitching!

- Shawl is worked according to chart, from end to end, beg at bottom of chart. Foll chart Rows 170; then work Rows 691 to complete shawl. It is critical to foll Row 71 in same direction as Row 70 to maintain proper perspective in this shawl. This will require flipping the chart. Check work at end of each row.
- Mark the first row of your chart on the side that you will begin reading from. Then mark every other row up on the same side that you will be starting from the same direction.
